Abdominal Binders ...did you use one?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all well :)

I am just wondering if any of you used an abdominal binder after surgery? I have talked with a few people who have had WLS and found it helpful. My mother has had 2 laparoscopic surgeries over the past 2 years and she said that they were a lifesaver.

I'm in the process of buying everything I need to be totally prepared for coming home after surgery now! My surgeon said that he doesn't give them out, but that if I would feel more comfortable, he has no issue with me using one and thinks I may find it helpful.

Before I spend the money, I am just wondering if any of you guys used binders post op, and if you found it helpful?

Thanks!

I did not use one. I was 58 when I had the procedure and seemed to heal very fast. Of course, everyone needs to do what is best for them. What did your doctor suggest?

I asked my surgeon if he used them routinely or not. He said he was happy to provide one, but most people complained they were too hot and too uncomfortable so he stopped using them.

@@ChocolateDropp7 has made a good point... reduces the effect of gravity. My surgeon does not use a drain so perhaps I will request the abdominal binder. I like things that makes sense! Ha.

I asked for it and was told they weren't used because of the risk of infection and friction on the incision sites. I wish I still had my old one. Gravity isn't my friend right now. A little support would help a lot.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
