HELP- Sore throat 1 week before surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am kind of panicking. Tomorrow marks one week before my surgery and of course right when they told me I can't get sick, I felt a sore throat coming on. My tonsils are very inflamed, red, and puss-y. It's definitely not strep (negative strep test) and I get this a lot- I always take a Z pack and it's better and completely gone within a few days.

I am so afraid to tell my surgeon and have my surgery cancelled because I already took off from work and wouldn't be able to reschedule until October. I know my throat will be better before my surgery, but will taking the Z pack for the next 4 days affect my surgery at all (azithromycin)??

Will azithromycin have any affect on my body that would negatively affect my surgery? They told me to not take Advil for a week before surgery so it doesn't thin out my blood. So something like that I'm asking.

Thank you for your help!!!!

I would suggest perhaps calling a pharmacy to speak with a pharmacist. They won't know the intricacies of your medical history, but they will be able to answer your basic question about Z-pack and bariatric surgery. The one thing that I could see potentially happening is that Zithromax can be harsh on gut flora, and you might end up with lower GI upset around the time of surgery. If you end up taking the Z-pack, take a probiotic.. it might help. Good luck!

You have to ask your surgeon about the Z Pack. I don't think they'll cancel as long as you're better by surgery but you have to tell them. Hope everything goes smoothly!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
