Don't stress about it. As other's have said - it is mainly to make sure you understand the surgery, the risks, the post-op plan and why the different phases and progressions and rules are there, and that you have realistic expectations. They also want to check that you have a support system (any support system - doesn't have to be your family). I don't think you can "fail" the evaluation, they may recommend you get some counseling to help with any underlying issues and they do it from the standpoint of wanting you to be as successful as possible.

I knew when i went in for my psyc eval. thst it would be 2 hours of written questions (multiple choice) and an hour talking to the psy. Doctor. It only took me an hour written test and 10 minutes talking. Just be honest. Some questions seemed really dumb to me but I just answered honestly. My understanding is there is no pass or fail. They just want to make sure you are emotionally ready for the upcoming changes. You will be fine...I was very nervous...then laughed when I got home. The questions were all over the place. Just a part of our journey. Let me know when you are done with it!!! Good luck...but you will do great!!!

Thank you - I don't know why this is the "scariest" part for me... additional counseling isn't a horrible proposition, I've just gone through so many years of it, even at an eating disorder clinic for binge eating disorder. I have a good support system at least, hopefully he focuses on that.

@@Qwalla thank you <3 when I had the lap band done I just remember that in my psych eval the doc was really annoyed that I was "so young" and getting it done and basically made me promise to go to al-anon and therapy, but I don't remember the questions. When I went in to the eating disorder clinic I had the hundreds of questions booklet and a pretty in depth analysis after that - I'm a perfectionist, type a, etc.

This is all great info thanks everyone! I was also worried about any underlying mental conditions that would get me denied, but it's great to see others with them getting approved from the psych Dr

It was easy and simple. They just want to make sure you understand the process and how if affects your life going forward. I can honestly say I thought it was a waste of time at first but now I can see how it is necessary. Even today two years out, I am wearing a size 12 dress but I still see the size 20 when I look in the mirror. *sigh*

@@janedoe92, my psych eval was 654 questions. It took me 3 hours to finish. I spoke to the shrink before I started. He asked about 30 minutes worth of questions which I tried to answer to the best of my ability. I felt like an idiot answering all these personal questions to a guy I didn't know. I was sick to my stomach with worry that I would not "pass" this test. He told me to answer with the first thing that came to my head. So I did and it was a cinch.

You can do it!

Hey everyone, well I am done with the psych evaluation and I think it went pretty well. I was asked quite a few questions wich is part of the process. Only catch was he wanted to delay my psych approval because he wanted me to attend a few sessions wich would mean 5-6 weeks !!!!! I wasn't too happy and explained to him that Wat he wanted me to take therapy for was not part of the reason why I was there he was suppose to talk about weight-loss etc. He actually agreed and gave me the ok so now I meet with my surgeon and hope for the very best!!!! (Thursday 18th)

@@RosieR Your emotions and mental health are as much of a part of this journey as the surgery. If he thinks you could benefit from therapy - I wouldn't argue. You will need all the tools available to you after surgery.

I had the first part of my psych eval yesterday, and it went much better than I anticipated. As usual, I was over thinking things. The only thing he did do was gently remind me that he does 1:1 sessions as well (LOL) and talk me down from a PTSD trigger. Today I go back and take the MMPI test (that 600-ish question monster) and then we follow up on the 31st for that. He said that I could email him and ask for a phone appointment to go over it so he could get it in before the 31st, so I may do that just so it gets me another week or so off of waiting. I wasn't expecting it to be a 3 parter to get it done, so that was overall the only disappointment.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
