I searched but didn't find a relevant topic -- when did everyone try salad (spring mix, spinach)? I keep wanting to try but then so worried it's going to cause major pro blems!!!

I tried it this past weekend at 5 weeks post - op. My plan allows salad after a month. I had some black kale and parmesan salad at one of my favorite restaurants after getting some Protein in with grilled octopus. I was scared it would cause issues because so many people have problems with lettuce and salad but it went down fine and was crazy delicious.

This was a late dinner - around 10:30 pm and the octopus was my final needed Protein for a day so I still had enough room for the kale. That's another reason I hadn't tried it yet, not sure when I will have room for salad again.

I didn't try salad for a long time, just because it was such a waste of space. I could barely eat enough to get in my 100 grams of Protein, so had no room for things like leafy greens. Unfortunately, once I was all healed up and my restriction subsided a bit, I found I still couldn't eat salad or any raw veggies. They make me INCREDIBLY burpy. Any raw veggies have that effect on me now. I do fine with cooked veggies though.

I had salad at 5 weeks out ( I was cleared for all foods then), and didn't have any issues. I've had salad many times now, and never any problems.

You might give saladd a try. Small amount into mouth; chew tho-r-o-ughly; swallow; pause. Some people do fine with it, others not. There's only one way to find out. If it doesn't sit well with you, stop and maybe try again in the future.

For max nutrients, stay away from empty things like iceberg lettuce which, in my opinion, is nasty-tasting anyway, and romaine and the like. Spinach is good as are many other greens. Look them up.

I've done well and (love salads) always with a Protein though! Everyone is different, won't know until you try!

I seem to do well with salad just not well with lettuce. My greens must be spinach, kale, arugula, I can even do romaine. The darker the better. I often make salads in mason jars just as a quick go to. Then if I grill chicken or fish I can toss it in. Anyways no difficulty digesting. Just chew well and swallow. You'd be surprised how much salad you can eat too. Just make sure you try and pair it with a Protein.

I get to have raw veggies this week at 8 week post op. Looking forward to a little variety but we will see about how much I can stomach. Mostly looking forward to berries.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
