there were times in early days when I would take a bite and literally walk AWAY from the table and come back for another small bite.

other times I would slowly eat half my portion and then hand the plate to my husband to put out of my reach for 5 minutes or so before I had any more.

Use a small spoon and try these tricks if needed - before you know it your swelling will go down and the pain will go away, hopefully new habits will be formed also.

Thank You I Christamo7 I'll try this I don't want to stretch my stomach out

Sent from my LG-H950 using the BariatricPal App

You really aren't going to stretch your stomach out by eating too fast, but you will likely cause yourself a lot of discomfort, At least while you are healing. Once you are all healed up, you can eat quickly with no real ill consequences. I find that eating quickly keeps me from eating too much now that I'm almost 2 years post-op. If I eat slowly, I can eat a lot more food, because it has time to actually move through my stomach and make room for more.

I used an app called Eat Slower to help me learn to eat at a more moderate pace. You can set the interval between bites as you choose and even choose the sound you like to chime when it is time to take a bite (including an oinking pig if that amuses you).

Your saucer? I'm picturing you as a kitten.

Some people do well with an egg timer. Put a very small piece of whatever in your mouth -- maybe no larger than your thumbnail -- turn the timer and chew until the sand runs out. Make a game of it. Chew until the food is pulp. Swallow and turn the timer again. This one is your pause before the next bite.

I had trouble training myself to slow down and chew well (and still have trouble). What a pleasant surprise again and again to discover that, when I make the effort, I get so much more flavor from each bite.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
