buckeyegirl76 8 Posted August 15, 2016 For any of you distance runners, Fit Cross enthusiasts or extreme sport participants. After the sleeve do you have any issues because of the very limited calorie intake; fatigue, dehydration, reduced performance, etc? I am pre surgery and concerned with being able to sustain work, such as hiking/climbing, over several consecutive days. I know initially I'll be limited during recovery but I'm wondering about 6-12 months post-op. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted August 15, 2016 I am currently training for a marathon (it's on September 18). I do struggle with trying to get enough calories in to not keep losing weight through my training, but I have it pretty well figured out now. I eat 7-8 times a day with one or two of those meal/snacks being carb-only. I also aim for very calorie dense Proteins like nuts and cheeses. I don't have any problems with hydration. I have no restriction with drinking now. That only lasted a few weeks post-op. I can gulp Water and G2 no problem. During my long runs, I use GU for calories/electrolytes and supplement my Water with G2 to stay hydrated. Before a run, I always try to eat something carb-heavy like a Clif Bar or whole grain toast with Peanut Butter.
camry2016 78 Posted August 15, 2016 I'm nearly 4 months out, so still a newb, but I had the same concerns you did, so I thought I'd chime in on my experience thus far. I started back running at 6 weeks post-op. Around 2-2/12 months I was back to my pre-surgery lifting weight. At first I felt off...little dizzy, weak, just not 100%, or even 75%. However, with each week it got better and I listened to my body vs. pushing through. Around 10 weeks post-op I started to feel much better. I'm running farther and faster than I have in over a decade. I am trying to figure when/what to eat before an intense workout because I now get nauseated and heart burn easier.
