Stopping Triamterene hctz for pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

I was told to stop my daily dosage of triamterene hctz when I begin my pre-op diet. I am to be on the pre-op diet for 3 weeks (on 4th day now).

That's a long time to be off my blood pressure meds so I'm a little concerned. I understand it's a diuretic, and that's why they want me off of it. I was thinking maybe a week before surgery, not 3 weeks before.

Just checking if there is anyone else was told the same thing or given other directions.

Thanks in advance.

I took valsartan hctz for my high bp. Pre-op - I had to stop 2 days before surgery. Post op - I didn't start back until 2 weeks after because of the hctz(the diuretic) since they didn't want me to dehydrate while i was struggling to meet Fluid intake. Once I started again - I had to cut the dosage in half about a week later due to lots and lots of dizzy spells daily. Then a month after that, I am off the valsartan hctz altogether because i was still having some dizzy spells and my bp was down to 90/54. Check with your surgeon again about when to stop the bp meds pre-op and don't be afraid to ask for the rationale. If you do have to stop that much in advance, keep checking your bp regularly. and post op - definitely keep a close watch on it - i was amazed at how quickly I needed to come off it.

If I were in your position, I'd ask the doctor who prescribes the triamterene HCTZ his opinion. If he thinks that three weeks is too long not to take it, I'd ask him to speak with the surgeon. Let them work it out so that both feel you'll be safe. I'd make the phone call today, as it may take a while for them to connect.

Thanks all. I called the bariatric doctor before I posted, but didn't think about calling my primary physician. Good idea. Thank you both for your input!! I always like to see what other doctors' tell their patients too. hehe

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
