1 week Post Op RNY, Surgery on 8/8

Recommended Posts

Hello all!!! I'm 1 week post op today!!! Wooooooo hooooo!!! Lol It's truly an interesting experience.

First, I had THE BEST surgeon and hospital staff that I could have in NJ. I was diabetic, had high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. I was in for 3 days...15 staples, 1 drain. I was discharged on NO meds for any of the comorbidities. So far they're all under control and have been since the hospital!!! I left without the drain. Incisions are healing well. I just want these staples out ASAP!!! Lol they pull at the puncture points, which is more painful than the surgery Lol

I'm focusing on walking and getting those liquids in...clear liquid diet for the first week after surgery. I've noticed some changes in tastes. I HATE the Jello that I used to love before surgery. I haven't been envious of those who can eat. Ironically, it helps me mentally to be around them. I've been watching the food Network and getting healthy recipes on Pinterest. I REFUSE to go through all of this and regain weight later. My husband has been super supportive!!!! He's been eating better...and wouldn't let me cook for him out of temptation. I have to cook...I love cooking...not an issue! Lol

This mental hunger thing is REAL!!! I'm telling you, CHECK YOUR MIND!!! If you don't address the reasons that you over ate and treated your bodies wrong...you will go backward! I found myself struggling hard during the 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I felt like it was punishment. I had to listen clearly and closely to my internal dialogue and check myself.

I could go on...but I wanted to give you a lil of how the process has been for me. I can't be the only one experiencing some things.

Overall, I feel great, even with the pain! I wouldn't trade this process for the world! It's making me stronger physically and mentally. May the progress continue...

HW...325, SW...293, surgery weight...285, current weight...269!!!!!

Congratulations with your surgery. During the early stages, when you are restricted to liquids, there is a desire to eat solid foods, especially foods that you chew. This is part of our digestive process. Chewing releases some digestive fluids in our body. Therefore this part of the process is disrupted. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. This was not noticeable until I transitioned from Full Liquids/Pureed stage into the solid food stage.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.

Thank you for sharing! We had the same surgery date and our experience has been similar. I am doing very well also. My surgeon used surgical glue or something like that. I have about 5 small incisions that don't give me much trouble now. I'm getting in about 60 grams of Protein a day and 50oz of Fluid. I have to do better with the fluids. I'm heading to the drug store now to find different Vitamins. I got the Celebrate chewable and they taste absolutely gross to me! My sister in law and I were just saying the same thing, we've come too far and gone through too much to regain all we have lost. She had the sleeve in February. Congrats and we will have to keep up with each other to motivate along the way.

I'm taking the Centrum Adult Chewable with Iron. It's not the gummy...that one doesn't have Iron. The Centrum tastes okay for a Vitamin lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
