It is weird I think the same way. I did not get out on a diet prior to surgery. And at 10 days I was told if I think I could start other foods to try it. While on the other hand people are eating liquids still mandatory. It's weird

@@LxA My plan was the same for the first 10 days, and then I was put right in to the soft food stage (which I loved that I got to skip pureed stage lol)

Every plan is different and I know it can be confusing.

Guidelines change as new studies come out. Some docs are more willing to make changes based on new studies than others.

Plus different doctors make changes based on their experiences with their patients. A good example from my practice is with eggs. You will see people on here commonly eating eggs in the soft stage, maybe even purée. My docs used to allow eggs when patients reaches stage 5 at 6 weeks out, but just changed it to 8 weeks out because they saw some patients have blockages due to eggs.

If you have questions about why your doctor's rules are a certain way, just ask. Good docs are willing to explain why.

I agree some of it is confusing. I am doing Clear liquids for 10 days (so so sick of broth), so only SF Gelatin, SF popsicles, broth and Water. I'm amazed that other people are drinking Protein drinks, Decaf coffee or eating eggs 3 days out.

I believe my surgical facility is more strict than others though.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that nutrition itself isn't an "exact" science. Every nutritionist has his or her own beliefs, based on practice and science together. I think that surgeons rely on their nutritionists to develop the pre-op and post-op diet plans.

Some places have "standards" that they recommend patients stay within, while others tailor specific diets to each patient (not likely for busy surgeons). These standards can be deviated from, especially if something may not work for you or if you have specific allergies or needs.

For instance, my nutritionist has a plan that every patient gets before the surgery. It explains the pre-op diet and post-op diet. Fortunately for me there was never any period that was 100% liquid. We were allowed some soft foods (foods that could easily slide through a funnel) as soon as we could tolerate it after surgery. The diet was full of typical recommendations....soups, yogurt, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, etc.

I mentioned to my nutritionist that I was interested in more of a "whole foods" based approach post-op and her eyes lit up and she provided me with a ton of information on how to accomplish that. It wasn't the normal plan that was handed out because eating a whole-foods based diet is often not the most "convenient" and certainly not the most budget-friendly, but it's what I wanted to do. I was set on taking this opportunity to completely retrain my tastes and focus on nutrient-dense foods and lean Protein sources.

It's worked out well for me so far and really all it boils down to is staying away from processed foods.

The key is to speak with your nutritionist about your specific wants/needs and then make that plan reality. I'm just glad I spoke with my NUT before surgery because I wouldn't have had the information or help that I have now if I didn't speak up.

You see this in other specialties as well. Doctors are proud of their autonomy, and each develops their own sense or what's best for their patients based on their training, their experiences, and the research they've kept up with. I had an extensive knee reconstruction years ago that was not widely done at the time, but there were several different rehab protocols, which one you got depended entirely on your surgeon. Also, some surgeons are "by the book" sorts, and some will take the patient's lifestyle and concerns into account and adapt the plan for them.

My plan was:

Clear for 1 week

Full liquids for 2 weeks

Puree for 1 week

Soft for 1 week

I was on day 9 of full liquids when I had my 1st post op appt and the doc said I could move on to puree. So I guess there are guidelines and some docs adjust depending on your progress

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
