Cost of Vitamins and Nutrients

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I'm in early pre-op stage of surgery, completing checklists, evaluations, etc. I've attended my first five pre-op support groups.

So my question is, how much on average, does it cost monthly, for all of the Protein, Vitamin and nutrient supplements that will be required post-op?

Prior to surgery, I was taking four types of prescription medicine to control my high blood pressure and diabetes. Those conditions went into remission when I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago. So the extra cost of the Vitamins and supplements that I take after surgery are comparable to the cost of the prescription medicine that I am no longer taking.

I take a Vitamin supp patch. IT's 25$. That's all for me.

that's sort of hard to say - it's a big investment up front because you're buying all those supplements at roughly the same time, but you run out at different times so you're only replacing one or two things a month. I do know the drop in my food bill has more than offset the cost of the supplements, though. Plus you learn to shop sales and stock up when you find good prices. I buy at CVS and Walgreens during BOGO sales - or I get things online when places are having 20% off (or whatever) sales.

So bottom line is it cheaper to go online or to say a big box store?

Look for sales. I bought a lot of mine initially online from drugstore.com (except for the Bariatric Advantage calcium chews that I got from bariatric choice). I have also bought some of my Vitamins at CVS when they have had sales.

I am ordering a box of vitamin patches as I think it'll be easier than attempting to ingest them. My pharmacist said they would be great. also not so hard to get them all in this way.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
