Ugh. Sorry to be the annoying newbie here but just want to get a little peace of mind. I had my surgery on 8/8 and I'm still getting what I can only describe as intense hunger pains. It happens pretty much whenever I drink anything and also randomly. It last about 3-5 seconds and goes away. Did anyone experience this and if so, do you remember how long it lasted? Is this really hunger pains that I'm feeling or something else? I keep expecting it to go away but it just isn't happening. I'm taking 20mg of Protonix in the AM. It's pretty much the only thing still bothering me at this point.

Thanks in advance,

Kellie

You have a lot of healing to do.

Your stomach has been through some serious trauma.

Much inflammation and such.

You are likely getting some odd feels that will subside in the weeks ahead.

I can remember these days well. I sorta felt that "blah" feeling the first 3-4 weeks, but then between 6-9 weeks things really started to fall into place and I felt exceptionally wonderful. That's been how it's gone ever since.

You had major surgery 4 days ago. You are feeling the effects.

You are starting to heal. Give yourself time to heal. Learn to listen to what your body is telling you. It takes time.

Every day is a step toward your goal. Slow and steady wins this race.

I remember feeling hungry throughout the whole 2 week liquid stage. At times it was real hunger, other times reflux.

Had lots of gurgling noises, and I knew lot of it was due to the trauma of this major surgery.

Warm broths helped me a bit. It got bit better during puree stage, less hungry but still hungry ....

Moving onto Soft/Mushy stage and being put on stronger PPI, Nexium 40mg, really helped, and my hunger finally went away.

So, once you get through the liquid phase, it does get better!

Good luck.

I keep reading about this "PPI" thing. What are PPIs?

Acid Reducer

Proton-pump inhibitors are a group of drugs whose main action is a pronounced and long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production. Within the class of medications, there is no clear evidence that one agent works better than another.

Thanks everyone. Of course, I know you are right. It is just hard to remember something that you can't see, I guess. I mean, I know what happened to my insides but physically I feel fine so I just assume that it's all fine in there too which clearly isn't the case. I broke my arm/elbow in April and had to have emergency surgery. I knew why that hurt! I could see the 12 inch incision and the swelling, etc. Internally, it isn't so obvious, I guess. Thanks for humoring me and telling me what I need to hear...again. [emoji3]

I also got my surgery 8/8 and feeling the same type of way. Just working through it and taking my proton pump inhibitors. I just don't know if I'm supposed to be eating more or not. Can't tell the difference.

Tawnmarie, I totally agree! I guess that's why I was asking if they were actual hunger pains or not. It's definitely a weird feeling not knowing if you are hungry or not.

I had my surgery on 08/09 and I feel much the same. My stomach rumbles and I get a sharp sort of crampy hunger feeling most times when I drink, even with teensy sips, but it dissipates really quickly. It seems to be worse with Water than other liquids, but it passes quickly regardless. I'm pretty sure this is normal and will pass. :)

I can't totally tell if I'm hungry yet, either, so I'm just going with the recommended Fluid and Protein levels and gauging how I feel so I can bring it up with my doctor next week if it feels off. But I'm doing pretty great at the moment in terms of energy and whatnot, so I think that means I'm okay for intake? But if you're dealing with a lot of fatigue it may be difficult to use that as a way to measure what's working for you. All depends on your body, I guess!

I definitely noticed the difference between different PPIs, together with few other Aussies post op. The Rabeprazole did not help me, I still had awful reflux.

Through an Australian sleeve support forum, other members shared their similar experiences, and Nexium was mentioned often.

I asked my surgeon for Nexium script, and after few days I finally was free of reflux.

So, in my experience different PPI worked for me! And for few others that I know.

Perhaps in Theory, they all supposed to be the same. In real life experience, PPIs differ!

Are your incisions still painful? It hurts for me to make any type of movement.

Yes mine still hurt. The pain is at a 3/4. It's an uncomfortable pain at most. Mostly the pulling feeling.

@@tawnmarie Thanks for sharing. I keep checking to see if they look infected, but they look okay. Hurts to sit, hurts to stand, hurts to move around.

I can't remember now how long my incisions hurt. I remember using oxycodone for a week post op.

My left side where I had a huge drain hurt more than my right side.

Also, later on I noticed I had few lumps at some incision sites.

All this pain went away, just can't remember how long it hurt. The lumps went away as well. And the last to go was my swollen abdomen, it took the longest to settle down. I looked like I was having triplets, post op!

If your incision sites are not red, hot to touch, then in my opinion you are still healing.

However, always check with your surgeon if this is bothering you.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
