Any suggestions on this? My dietician gave this to me today. I went out and bought Atkins meals and Protein Shakes. Kind of spendy. Is any one else on something similar to this?

She wants me to take the 15 pounds off quick. My insurance won't pay for the surgery if I don't lose the 15 pounds by October.

She said I could have all the cheese, I wanted, I was thinking of putting it over the broccoli.

I was also thinking of getting chicken breasts and cooking them and adding vegetables instead of ready made Atkins meals.

Since I have a brain injury and have a hard time planning, she just figured popping a Adkins ready made meal in the oven, would be a lot more convienant. Any how, just wondering if anyone else has done this and if you have any suggestions you could add.. Thanks

I didn't read the pictures but it sounds like she wants you to follow a strict low carb diet. That's a good choice. It's the only way I've ever been able to lose weight actually. Reading labels is very important though, even with cheese. Some processed cheese will actually have some carbs in them. Some isn't a problem, but if you eat too much of it they do add up quickly.

Eat lots of meat, cheese in general is good but be careful how much because of hidden carbs. Stay away from starches and grains. Some veggies that are good on low carb are broccoli, cauliflower, green Beans, spinach, lettuce, zucchini, cabbage, and green peppers. Definitely stay away from rice, potatoes, things like that.

Compared to a lot of other diets, especially the non-diet that most of us used to eat (cheap, junky foods), it is definitely more expensive. And being unable to plan well will make it more so. But it can be very successful at weight loss, so if you stick with it I feel confident that you'll lose the weight needed, and more.

I find for dinners it's easier to buy chicken in bulk and then divide it out in to how many I need for each meal, I also buy tons of frozen veggies. I then bake the chicken and steam the veggies.

I also buy big packs of 97% lean ham or turkey sandwich meat and section those out in 4oz portions with 4oz of a block of cheese. For Breakfast I like boiled eggs and turkey sausage. The lower ur carbs the faster ull lose weight. After 3-5 days of under 20g of carbs ur body will go into ketosis and will use ur body fat for fuel. Hell at this point if you can do that you may not even have to exercise. If you get a hankering for something else find you a low carb Protein shake, maybe something that taste sweet to give you a nice change in flavor.

I would be very careful with the concepts of "I can have all the cheese I want".

While most cheeses are low carb, they are also calorie dense.

In addition to staying low carb you are also trying to lose those 15 lbs over the next 6 weeks.

I suggest that your nutritionist also give you a calorie goal for each day. You can use an app like MyFitnesspal.com to help you track your food (calorie) consumption as well as watching your carbohydrate consumption.

I think you can lose that 15 pounds really effectively, too.

When eating very low carb (20 or under) calories aren't really a concern. That's one of the appeals of low carb. I lost over 100 pounds on low carb before while eating over 2000 calories a day. There are other reasons to watch out for too much cheese though.

On Atkins phase one it recommends no more than 3-4 ounces of cheese a day.

Calories are always a concern for me.....even while on low carb diet.

Granted....most folks following a typical low carb diet will enjoy the lack of hunger from eating the Proteins and fats and will not overeat as a result. We are dealing with people here, like me, who overate for reasons other than hunger.

For us, calories are always a concern.

I suppose that is true. Everyone is different. For me calories weren't a concern and I lost well without restricting them. But I also didn't have the overeating problem that many here do have.

My doctor's pre op consists of four Meal Replacement shakes if made with milk/soy milk/almond milk or five if made with Water. I started my 3 weeks pre op yesterday. Calories 800-900, carbs under 100.

I do have a few suggestions and thoughts.

First off I am a teacher and I have worked with adults who have brain injuries. I know it requires step by step instruction and guidance. I am 6 month post op and had to be on a 6 month pre op diet. Since last June I have lost 110 pounds and my surgeon is very pleased with my progress. I am not as knowledgeable as many of the veterans who did post but I do feel I could help you if you need more help. If you are wanting further info other than what I wrote here feel free to become a friend. :)

1. Your dietitian may have said all the cheese you wanted but your paperwork says a small amount of cheese. serving is 1 oz. That tells me you shouldn't have all the cheese you want.

This plan doesn't look like the typical shrinking liver pre-op as they are usually for 2 days to 2 weeks, The first part of the plan is what you are to do for the first 4 weeks. The second part looks more like the liver shrinking part.

2. Anyhow these first 4 weeks you are to have 2 meals of Protein Drinks so have a hot chocolate Protein Drink for Breakfast, have a snack of a sugar free Jello or popsicle or broth. Have a Protein meat and some type of low carb vegetable for lunch. Have an afternoon snack of a low carb, low sugar protein drink. Have your dinner similar to your lunch but choose a different protein meat. If your still hungry you can have an evening snack of sugar free jello popsicle or broth or a cheese or turkey stick.

The last 2 weeks you cut out your lunch or dinner meal and have a protein drink. You can have up to 3 to 4 of them a day. If you get the kind that have 30 grams of protein and are less than 200 calories you will have a sufficient amount of protein just on the shakes alone.

3. As for Atkins I wouldn't do that as they are small portions and some of those frozen foods have very high sodium in them and higher carbs than I think the dietitian wants you to have. However if you are very selective and stick with maybe 3 or 4 of the beef and chicken dinners a week you might be ok.

4. Other posters here and on your other posting from yesterday gave you some good ideas and suggestions for food choices as well as exercising in the pool.

5. One other thing you might want to do is cook all your meats within a day or 2 of buying them. Then portion out 3 to 4 oz for each meat and place them into foil and then all of those same meats into a big baggie with the meat name, date and oz. During the week pull out a foil pack from the bag before you go to work and place it in the refrigerator. After work all you have to do is heat the meat up for a minute or two in the microwave add a vegetable and your ready to eat. It sure cut down on all the prep and cleanup during the week.

You can do this and lose the 15 pounds in the 2 months. I did something like this and lost 20 pounds in 2 months.

I will get back to everyone tonight. I am busy today, but thank you all so much for your input. I was surprised when ssflbelle mentioned the sodium content of the Atkins meals. Check out the picture I took of one of the Atkins meals. Check out the sodium!!! I was shocked and also surprised my dietician would recommend these meals, since she knows I am salt sensitive.       Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
