Throat infections after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I was sleeved 11/21/14. All was going great and i made my weight loss goal by about 10 months in. However starting july 2015 i have had one peculiar side effect: chronic throat infections.

Not talking like little scratchy throats. I am talking requires IV fluids with steroids, then oral levaquin and steroids for a minimum of a week. I am now in the middle of my 6th infection in a year. Docs keep chalking it up to having a 3 year old. But neither she nor my husband catch what i get.

I can only conclude that it has something to do with my sleeve. Something to do with the loss of good bacteria, the overuse of PPI's (they have me on pantoprazole still), the diet slipping (i *may* have enjoyed too much alcohol of late - all celebratory). Is it maybe an absorption issue? I don't know exactly. All I know is I have to figure this out.

Wondering if anyone else has had this side effect? Anything that has helped? I am getting my ENT and a new GI on the case this week cause I have had enough.

Could your throat problem stem from stomach acid eroding the lining of your throat?--GERD

There is a study out now that is connecting long term use of PPIs to kidney disease. Maybe there's a connection to your problem as well.

I will follow your thread to see what others have to offer.

I believe some interesting research might be in order.

In the meantime, feel better, Friend.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
