When did you have your first drink?

I know they say no alcohol. But I'm looking for personal stories, not opinions please :) I'm going to a wedding this weekend - I know, no beer.

I took a sip of communion wine at 3-4 weeks. Burned like the fires of hell.

Liquor and cheez-its! :D Yum!

I waited until my surgeon gave me the go ahead and I had my first drink at home because I did not know how it would affect me.

When does your surgeon green light drinking?

I predict this to be a very calm and thought provoking discussion.

I have the occasional glass of wine (personal preference). I had my first glass of wine about 3 months post op. The wine did not make me sick. Everyone is different, though.

Very smart. My surgeon has no alcohol forever on his paper...

There are lots of reasons doctors have no alcohol or a fairly long wait on drinking.

First and foremost. Empty calories. Your goal is to lose weight, I assume. Drinking your calories is a really bad idea. And once you've had that alcohol, many people tend to make bad decisions on what they put in their face. Are you (general/plural) really going to reach for SF puddding (sic) or greek yogurt or are you going to finish off that bag of popcorn or the infamous box of Cheez its? ;)

Secondly, your stomach has a fresh incision and it takes time to heal. The acidity in wine, soda, and jooce (sic) mixers can irritate that tender tummy. No bueno.

Third, you don't know how alcohol will affect you. I got totally blitzed off a glass of wine, and was dead sober an hour later with my first drink. (And the heartburn that commenced had me rolled up on the floor in tears for an hour.) You really shouldn't be eating and drinking at the same time, so there goes the option for foood (sic) in the tummy to soak up some of the booze.

But you are an adult and only you can decide for yourself. I am sure you will make exactly the right decision for you. :D

At my 1 week visit my surgery team told me I would be cleared for alcohol at 2 weeks post op. We discussed it at length- the different drink options, what kind of drinks I usually order. I pretty much exclusively stick to tequila and soda Water and they were fine with that- but stressed that I avoid stuff that's very caloric and sugary like margaritas, flavored alcohols etc.

I was surprised by their approach but I trust my surgeon. And I appreciate that he trusts me to make my own good decisions.

Since that talk, I had about a half of a Bloody Mary at 3 weeks post op, and a half a tequila and soda on 2 occasions. I'm 5 weeks out now. Each time I made sure I was getting all my Protein and upped the Water intake for the day. The drinks hit me more than they have in the past, hence why I haven't finished any of them.

My program allows alcohol at 1 month...I've sipped a couple of beers and had a couple of glasses of wine, didn't spontaneously combust and wasn't all that interested in finishing either drink. I also didn't 'feel' the alcohol more than I used to, in fact it seems to have less affect on me. Honestly, I put them in the same category as fruit juice and other sugary beverages...I have to give up virtually every other carb I'd put in my mouth that day for that one drink, and it's seldom worth it.
That said, my life is loaded with social events where social drinking is the norm. I expect at some point I'll be a little less restrictive with alcohol but for the time being, I want to tear through this honeymoon period losing as much weight as possible so I'm strongly limiting myself.

I used to be a heavy 'binge' drinker before surgery, after 6 weeks I had a few drinks and I did get a little tipsy but nothing scary happened. I've just got back from vacation in Barcelona, and one of the nights I was extremely drunk from just having 1-2 drinks.. The thing is, I've found that I don't really enjoy drinking anymore. Always consult with your doctor first, see when he gives you the green light, take it easy.. And slow, and just remember that it will more than likely hit you differently than before.

Now I look back, alcohol was a way to give me 'confidence' that I needed for being so insecure.. 60 pounds down 3 months out and I just don't need that comfort blanket anymore.. Good luck! And be safe

My dr says to wait a year and that sounds about right to me. Your new tummy needs time to heal. Adding alcohol to it too soon after surgery seems like a bad idea. In addition the empty calories go against getting the most you can out of the short honeymoon phase.

hahaha sometimes I wonder if a post is really a question that someone is looking for a real answer, or if they are just posted for our entertainment....Posts about drinking, smoking, and eating off plan always go downhill pretty quickly.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
