After Surgery Helper

Recommended Posts

When I come home just after surgery, how much help will I need from others to get around and handle the basic necessities of life? I really only have my elderly mother to help me, and she is not nearly strong enough to lift me out of bed or anything like that. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks so much.

I wonder the same thing! I have 3 kids and 2 dogs. I was wondering how long my husband will need to take off work.

It differs for every person. If you're currently able to get around independently then you probably should be fine after surgery. You should be up and walking within a few hours of being admitted to your room post op. You'll just likely be moving a little slower! Walking frequently helps, and pain meds are your friend if you need them!

Thank you! That is really helpful to know. I'm able to get around just fine now, so it's a relief to know that will translate to recovery.

It should! My hubby was with me the day of surgery and the day after and then went back to work. I don't have kids, just two little dogs, but the three of us managed just fine [emoji4]

It depends how active you are. Im very active and probably do more then what im supposed to . I have two children 5 and 3 and I need a little help. I get tired very quickly and I unable to pick them up because I feel a lot of pain. Your incisions can open up. Ask for help . I.feel like i had a baby . Also no being able to eat can also get u in a bad mood and emotional.

I have three fantastic mutt-dogs myself, so it sounds like we'll be OK after all. :)

I'm told bending can be difficult so feeding the dogs might be a challenge that you'll need to plan for. Maybe just having someone standby if you need them you can call or to stop by once a day or something. I prefer to be by myself when I don't feel well. I'm planning to send my SO to work and see how I do.

@@KristenLe I hadn't thought of that—about feeding the dogs, but you're right. That's something to consider. Not a huge obstacle though, by any means. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I'm like you. I prefer to be alone when I'm not feeling well with just a little check-in each day.

@M Ashley My dogs are both "elderly" and one is having mobility problems and sometimes needs my help to get up (with a harness). I'm just hoping I'm able to manage her without an issue. Although - they'll probably both sleep the entire day anyway.

I worried about this pre surgery too. Im just a week post op. I live alone with my dog, with no help in sight. But let me tell ya everything was fine..well for me. I know everyone is different. I did not get stuck on the potty like I feared the most. Lol. I was able to bend completely over right out the gate....since of course I kept dropping things. First few days of feeding my dog or walking up and down the stairs I winced a lil, but nothing major. I was a lil and still am slow moving. The first night how I was on the phone, stood up to put my slippers on, and fell over onto the couch. Lol. I will say that my dog is only 15lbs and walking her the first few days was like having a Great Dane pull me. But otherwise things have been peachy. Still lil ol miss independent me, just with a couple more scars.

I predict you will do fine as well.

It's never too late, until its too late

Thank you so much for that. It is extremely comforting to know. My mom can do some things for me, but mobility would be absolutely up to me.

Congratulations on your surgery and your first week. Sending all my best your way for a wonderful journey.

I also live alone and it didn't cause any problems after surgery. I did have some pain and had to literally hold my belly with my hand if I wanted to bend but that was about the worst of it. I kept a long pair of bbq tongs handy for when I dropped things on the floor so I didn't have to bend too far :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
