Al Roker

Recommended Posts

This morning I was watching the today show and I knew Al had gastric bypass. So as the show went on I saw it was s'mores day! The whole time my eyes were on Al thinking don't eat it! The sweet chocolate, marshmallow, and sprinkles could give him bad bad dumping syndrome. Though I don't know off camera, he didn't eat it!!! he just held it in his hand and close to his mouth maybe smelling it? Then laid the s'mores creations down phewwww!!! Haha has anyone done this to a friend or a person you know?

How funny! I have never seen him eat on the air, either. I read an article about him in a magazine a couple of years ago, where he confessed that he pooped his pants at the White House!! Poor guy, what a trooper. I suspect it must have been somewhat soon after his surgery, or he experienced dumping. I really admire him for the success he has had after his surgery, and I love that he was so real about his experience in that article.

Not everyone who had gastric bypass dumps. My husband had it 10 years ago and has never dumped. Plus I think Al Roker is like 14 years out from surgery.

And yes, he shat his pants at the White House not long after his surgery. Never trust a fart!

My brother in law had gastric bypass almost two years ago now. I feel a bit guilty but I judge him all the time. I don't say things to him though! He doesn't know that I know as much as I do about WLS. I also didn't tell him about my VSG surgery 2 weeks ago. He eats things he shouldn't all the time and kind of acts like he's proud of when he's able to cheat the surgery. Like when he was able to drink his first beer, or eat chicken wings. You wouldn't know it by looking at what he eats anymore that he's had WLS. He eats a fairly normal amount. Sadly. He also stopped losing weight about a year ago and gained some back. He's still a lot smaller and probably healthier than he used to be, but I wish he had chosen to use his surgery to its full advantage.

Al had surgery so long ago, I doubt he dumps or even has any malabsorption left.

That reaction to him eating or not eating is exactly why I will never make my surgery public.

14 years later and he is still the gastric bypass guy to people.

Please don't get me wrong--I truly admire him and everything he has been through. I don't just see him as the gastric bypass guy; I truly appreciate what he has shared that may have helped many people. I like his affect, his sense of humor, and I only thought about not seeing him eat because they do have unhealthy foods quite often on the show. I think it's great that he seems to know very well what works for him, and he can choose how he wants to feed his body regardless of who might be watching. He's kind of one of my heroes...and I do see more than the surgery when I look at him.

I totally appreciate him being open about his surgery. Until more people are willing to share that they had surgery, it will keep being something that people feel the need to hide. I recently found at that 3 people I know had the surgery and never told anyone, lied about it in fact.....the result? I felt like there was something really wrong with ME that I couldn't pull it together and lose my extra weight. If they had shared their story with me instead of keeping it hidden, I might have gotten here a few years ago.

It's important surgery, helpful surgery, and the stigma needs to go away.

I understand. It's kind of weird, but I often try to imagine what some of the ladies must eat...when they eat ice cream or something else on the show, I wonder if it makes them crazy to eat that way even for one moment. I wonder if they have to work really hard to stay so thin. So I kind of look at a lot of people on TV and wonder if it's harder for some than others. It's about me, not them. I am kind of screwed up about my weight and other people's too.

I told EVERYBODY, because I wanted them to know that I wasn't going to accept my obesity any longer. They all knew I had tried for two years to do it alone...So I was excited for a solution.

A year later, for me surgery seems like something in the past. I don't feel like a WLS patient forever, and I don't want to give other people the opportunity to put that label on me forever.

I'm pretty sure 14 years from now, I won't want people commenting on what I am eating and wondering if it would make me sick.

I used to work with a lady that was very open about having surgery. People always talked about that when they talked about her, like that was her main attribute and she was less of a person. They never talked about her other qualities, and when she got married, they wondered if she would be able to have children because she had surgery.

I'm already a double minority, I don't need another label to go through life with.

It's a personal thing, and I think everybody has their own comfort level with telling others. We all have our reasons to tell or not tell, and I think it's completely fine to do what is best for your situation. We don't owe anyone any explanations.

Well I brought him up bc I looked up who has had the surgery famous!... Then here I am going to have my surgery so I look up to him and his ways.... And your not in the public eye so really 14 years from now would be a total difference. Go Al for not eating a s'more!!!!! Positive vibes

I would just add that not everyone has dumping and for MOST, dumping goes away after the first few years.

I have never dumped......so many people choose gastric bypass thinking the dumping will help them behave only to be disappointed which I find funny.

I do not want to dump ever......

In the beginning I thought the best thing to do was to be open and honest about my surgery. I learned over time, if I had to do it over again I wouldn't. Not because I am not proud but because people do label you and watch you and judge you.

Guess what, I have had sweets every once in a while. Do I really want every person judging me with what I eat? Um no........I am a big girl and will take responsibility for my actions. If I eat the wrong thing and gain weight then I know my clothes are not going to fit and that will piss me off and remotitvate me to stay the course.

Just my two cents.....:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
