Anyone with a low BMI (30-33) had sleeve surgery or will be?

Recommended Posts

my BMI was 33 - so my insurance (Kaiser) would not cover it. I decided to have my surgery in Mexico with Dr. Lopez-Corvala. My father had a triple bypass, my brother had a massive heart attack at 48 (thankfully survived) and my other brother had diabetes. When I was younger, I worked out at a gym 6 days a week and managed my weight that way.
Now I am 59 - and have tried unsuccessfully to lose 60 lbs for many years. only my family knows I had the surgery, for two reasons 1) I didn't want to hear "you weren't that big, you could have lost it on your own" and 2) you went to Mexico?!!!
It was the best decision I made. Sadly, when I was in Mexico, my younger sister got very ill from obesity related disease, and passed away the week I returned. That confirmed that I definitely made the right decision.

Dr Lopez is the only other doctor in TJ in addition to Dr Ortiz that I would trust with my life to perform WLS. Congratulations on making that move and ensuring a higher quality, if not longer life.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
