Anyone with a low BMI (30-33) had sleeve surgery or will be?

Recommended Posts

Hi @@kendra01,

Congrats on surviving these major health risks and challenges, and on looking ahead to surgery.

Some people don't experience a hideously horrible phase. But among those who do, you'll usually read -- at least in the weight loss phase (I'm early days, can't speak to struggles a year down the road) about:

- the pre-op diet, which varies by surgeon, and can be for example weeks of just liquids. Some people find this very very hard;

- the post-op liquid diet, which for most people means less hunger than the pre-op diet but some people really really want to CHEW, and don't like Protein shakes; or

- the very first few days after surgery. Some people experience regret during this period, some people are in more pain than they anticipated...etc. I would guess that since you have been through major surgery already you might not be as fazed by the immediate post-op recovery. Just one data point: I had a c-section several years ago, and -- of course everyone is different -- for me personally, having the memory of that recovery made my WLS recovery much less stressful. For me, this surgery was less painful abdominally, had a much quicker physical recovery, and of course was not accompanied by a post-partum hormone crash. So while I have had struggles and frustrations over the past month, I didn't go through a period of regret or of real horror at the physical agony of it all. Again, everyone's different and I just wanted to share my experience.

So...you could have a hideously horrible phase before or after surgery, or you might not have one at all.

Thanks hats123 ;)

I'm just soaking it all up lol

I have my appt with dr next month to find out about if he's happy to do the surgery for me and then hoping for around the 23/1/17 as I need to wait for my leave to build up. But it can't come soon enough I wish it was all done and dusted already - the wait is forever lol

Yes, here's to bulges getting smaller and smaller, and then disappearing!

Here's to the shrinking us :) !!!

It feels good to fit in clothes that I wanted to wear but couldn't..and it also feels good to eat clean and healthy????

Hi Kendra,

yes, congratulations for getting through and surviving your major health issues!

Hope you are approved for surgery, and that it happens soon.

As for waiting, I was there myself. I was supposed to be operated last July 2015, but the pre-op tests showed I had Graves disease ( very hyper-thyroid), so I had to come back once my thyroid was stabilised.

This situation made me wait 9 months, and I was finally sleeved early March 2016.

Still, better wait than possibly die on the operating table due to thyroid storm .....

As for the "worst" time, for me it was the first 2 weeks post op, on the liquid only phase. I was hungry a lot and sick of fluids only, but I persevered.

I also got really bad acid reflux, and this got better weeks later on a different script. Nexium was the only drug that helped me.

Now, 6 months later I weaned myself of Nexium very slowly, and so far so good: no more reflux.

So, all the best for you. Hope all goes well for you :)

I am, and I live on the Gold Coast. Had my op here with dr. Jordaan.

We have few people from Brisbane on this forum.

Type in "Brisbane" in Search, or go further down to sub-forums.

Here is one:

And I think there is another one, perhaps under Australian sub-forum

This US-centric sleever is just a mess with all this talk of kilograms and centimeters!!! GAHHH!!! I'm bad enough at math already without having to do conversions!! :)

Just kidding. Well I mean it's TRUE, but I'm well aware of my US-centrism. And my math limitations.

Good luck to all new sleevers in this thread, be you in Boston or Brisbane or in between...or farther away still!

;)

LOL, I am the exact opposite ..... Been born and raised in Metric system :)

1 kg is 2.2 Ib, I can multiply by 2 no problems, but for the 0.2 I need a calculator.

As for Fluid ounces I am totally lost, have to look up conversions .....

:)

I'm a 31 BMI and rising each month since I hit 50. I've never managed to lose weight other than using diet pills in my 30's then I regained of course. Im having the op in the next few weeks. Are there any low BMIers out there who have regretted getting the sleeve? I hope not.

I hate to be that person but i just cant fathom why anyone with a low BMI would want to do this?? I was running track at 200 lbs. It just seems like it takes very little effort to lose when you not morbidly obese. It just seems like there are so many other options.

I was considered "morbidly obese" at 232#, because of my height and had lapband surgery, lost 70# and was still obese. Due to lapband failure, aspirating during the night, my band was unfilled and I regained a significant amount of weight causing me to be pre-diabetic, have high cholesterol, a fatty liver and severe achilles tendinitis. I had successful weight loss with the lapband, which is also a restrictive surgery. With weight loss from my upcoming gastric sleeve, my health issues should resolve. Just because I have a low BMI doesn't mean I should be a less qualified candidate than someone with a BMI of 45. Co-morbidities kind of evens out the playing field. Before you judge one person to be less qualified then another.....take all data into account

I have about 50lbs to lose. Op is booked for the 5 Oct. many friends have told me I'll have to deal with loose skin. Do any of you low BMIers who have lost similar know if this is the case? I just want to manage my expectations. Thx

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
