Anyone with a low BMI (30-33) had sleeve surgery or will be?

I think what people forget is if it was so "easy" to lose the weight why would any of us want to go thru this type of surgery as it certainly is not easy! The majority of us have travelled many Weightloss paths trying everything and anything, good and bad.

Pinkberry is entitled to her opinion just as we are all entitled to make a informed and educated choice on whether we want to have this surgery or not. It's been a great choice for me.

I hate to be that person but i just cant fathom why anyone with a low BMI would want to do this?? I was running track at 200 lbs. It just seems like it takes very little effort to lose when you not morbidly obese. It just seems like there are so many other options.

My BMI is 37 which isn't super low, but my surgeon told me it's definitely one of the lowest he regularly sees. We don't want to wait until we're 400 lbs and have hurt our health even more. If you were running track at 200 and gained enough to need the sleeve you should understand that weight is hard to maintain. I've had more than enough of this 10 year ride with my BMI jumping around from as low as 23 to as high as 40. I don't want to wait until I NEED the surgery.

Acid reflux and dehydration happens to few people, but not to everyone. I was one of those people who got bad acid reflux after my op. I never had GERD and I only had intermittent reflux once I got fat, but it didn't happen everyday.

Post surgery, initially I had lot of reflux, then at each food phase change, reflux appeared again, even though I was on Rabeprazole PPI. I found out through forums that Nexium helped many people, so I asked my surgeon for a script, and Nexium did wonders for me.

Dehydration can easily happen, as very early post op it is difficult to get enough Fluid in. You still sip it, and I didn't feel that thirsty, plus I was conscious of Fluid going down. It wasn't painful, but I felt it, and it gurgled all the way down.

I started adding bit of apple juice or tiny amount of lemonade to my Water, as post op it was difficult for me to drink Water, something to do with the pressure.

I also bought Hydralyte for emergencies.

Yes, the first 2 weeks post op, on liquids only were tough for me. I was hungry a lot, and felt unsatisfied. Hot broths helped and some watery Soups too. I was getting sick of Protein shakes, and was craving hot, savoury stuff.

Luckily, that phase went quickly for me.

Purees were much better, and I got quite creative with my NutriBullet :)

Soft/Mushy stage was great, finally was able to eat "real" food

I just bought the Nutribullet! I'm on pre op liquid diet so can't really use it yet but looking forward to making soups. Got any favorites?

I am 5'3". 205lbs. I am self pay gastric sleeve. Aug 15th. I lost 96 pounds on my own 4 years ago. But since put back on 60. I don't see how it is any different for me and o lose 100 as a heavier person to lose 100? My husband is the only one that knows about surgery because I fear others think it's the easy way out too. Why can't I just eat less and go to the gym. Many other regular weight people eat like I do and don't go tongue gym. But also don't gain weight. Everyone is different.

I told many people...I dare them to mouth off at me! Lol I'm a lot bigger than most and in this pre op liquid diet kinda cranky!

I too have low BMI (32) but do not have any of comorbidities mentioned. I have rheumatoid arthritis and extra weight makes it hard some days to move around. I hoping with VSG and loss of 60 lbs, the strain of extra weight on bones will help. I am 5'7" at 207 still researching drs and hoping for November date. No nastiness given and hopefully not received, I wish you the best on your new success and I am looking forward to mine. Keep me posted on your progress, also who is everyone using for procedure?

My favourite Soups for the new baby stomach were: pumpkin, Tomato and mushroom. Easy to digest and tasty. I stayed away from anything spicy.

NutriBullet is wonderful. I even pureed salads or cooked veggies.

Yes, I had my aeroplane jellies faithfully every day, different flavours.

I looked in my pantry yesterday, and there is still a bunch of jellos there, as well as 2 boxes of Optifast ......

Another nice Soups was asparagus, but the bits had to be either pureed or taken out.

My BMI is 34 (my surgeon worked it out to be 33 but I was wearing shoes so I think she thought I was taller) and I've been dieting for 37 years. It is harder and harder to lose weight these days, even with frantic exercise, a busy and active job and a very strict diet. I have insulin resistance, hypertension, high cholesterol, PCOS and a few other things that would improve with less weight on my body. I also have a scary family history of heart disease on both sides.

My VSG is scheduled for 10 days time. My surgeon agrees with me that if I'm really unlikely to lose weight any other way now, and that if I'm going to do it then the best time is before I have my first heart attack or stroke. I tried so many diets and exercise plans, and I've never been normal, let alone slender!

My husband was against the idea at first, he's scared I'll die during the operation. Luckily statistics are on my side on that one and he's a mathematician so he's feeling a little less terrified now. My mum was surprisingly easy to talk around, she's always worried about my weight because of the family health problems - although she's never been overweight and really doesn't understand why dieting is so difficult. She thinks skipping lunch is a painful ordeal and has never met a biscuit she didn't like. She can also still fit into her wedding dress which is impressive (but a little creepy!)

I have only had one negative reaction to telling people about my VSG - a friend who said she didn't think I should have it done if my BMI was less than 35. I asked her why, did she think I'd have a better chance to survive surgery or a better weight loss outcome if I started off 20lbs heavier?

I haven't told more than 4 people about the upcoming surgery because of this one negative reaction, which sounds a bit silly when I write it down but I could do without the naysayers while I'm a bit nervous and also because I'm somewhat cranky on my pre-op diet and likely to be a tad less than tactful in my answers!

I would have been sleeved at 32.3 BMI, I am the same height as you. Unfortunately I had to wait 9 months for my sick thyroid to stabilise. My surgeon was worried I'd go into thyroid storm and die on the table .....

I put on another 13 kg in that time, so I finally got sleeved at 101kg and 37.1 BMI

5 months later I lost 26 kg, and all is going well, except I am still not sleeping well due to my thyroid med getting too strong with each weight-loss, putting me back in the hyper state .....

My family history has lot of heart disease and thyroid disease, which in itself weakens the heart.

I feel so much healthier now :)

I also did not tell many people about my op, only closest friends know, and they are all very supportive.

It boggles me that some people are always ready to be offended and take any sort of differing opinion as immediate attack.

Why must almost every issue become an "us against them" scenario?

This was another case where the thread was started defensively, others jumped in saying "Yeah! Yeah! Just wait for the bullying to start, it always does..." and then the first person who offered a different thought was immediately jumped on for no reason. She wasn't rude in any way, in my opinion, in fact she was quite gracious even after being spoken to quite harshly.

Put down the boxing gloves, ladies! It's ok to agree and disagree. Discussion is good. Differing opinions are how we learn from each other. Yes, this place is a form of support, but it's also about learning, sharing, discussing, debating, That does not always have to mean a pending fist fight.

No mic dropping necessary. ;)

Back to the OP: I had a BMI of 30 when I was sleeved, almost 6 weeks ago. I was - and still am - very fit,but kept gaining weight. You can see my resulting stats. Glad i did the WLS.

My BMI is 34 and I am scheduled for surgery on 8/24. So excited. Even though I am not extremely over weight, I have struggled my whole life. Went on first diet at age 14. I have no health issues except a hernia so I am a self pay for a little less than half. I am 53 and frankly just tired of "always" needing to be on a diet. I can lose the weight, keep it off for a while but it always creeps back on. I am doing this as a means to keep it off and not spend the rest of my life beating myself up.

My surgeon told me twice "that I am going to be smokin hot" when I am to my goal weight. That made me feel great!!

I started the 10 day shake diet today. I can so do this!!! I have my pre-op Tuesday. This will be the best thing I have ever done for myself. You are right, I only need to lose 50 to 60 pounds but it will be forever gone!!! I all ready exercise, eat pretty health but that never seemed to matter. Now it's going to be GONE!!

As newly post ops and even before, there's so much focus on getting the surgery to LOSE the weight. And why shouldn't there be? That's the purpose, right?

I was a champion loser. I have gained and lost hundreds of pounds in my 49 years of life. Losing was actually very easy for me, because I tend to be an all or nothing type of person.

The problem was, when I lost it, I went right back to the crappy habits that got me fat in the first place and put the weight back on, and then some. I'd managed to diet my way up to 235 pounds. I was more middle of the road BMI at 39 when I had surgery.

My hope was the surgery would give me the kick in the ass I needed to take my health seriously, and not continue the bad habits that made me obese in the first place. So far at 2 years out and below my goal weight, it's working. Whether your BMI is a 30 or 50, KEEPING the weight you lose off by changing your habits to live a healthier life is the ultimate goal, no? NOT how much you need to lose to do it. If getting WLS helps you do that, more power to you!

Hi again. everyone! These forums are so big that it's hard to know exactly which threads to post in. Please redirect me if I'm in the wrong place.

I had my surgery on Thursday, 8/11, and came home the next day. Friday and Saturday were hard because I was so, so sore, like I had done 10,000 sit-ups. I'm still really sore, but it started to get better yesterday and is noticeably better today. Today is day 3 or 4 depending on whether you count surgery day.

So far the only nausea was immediately post-op, and from the pain reliever drip they gave me in the hospital. But Zofran has been a great solution to that.

I definitely feel like I'm crossing over from the hideously horrible phase and would say I'm officially on the mend. I lost a few pounds on the pre op diet, but I don't know where that stands since my home scale is being fickle, and bc I had so much IV Fluid in the hospital.

Today I get to start the shakes again -- can't believe how much I am looking forward to that!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
