Anyone with a low BMI (30-33) had sleeve surgery or will be?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm in the process of scheduling my sleeve surgery and am wondering if anyone else with a lower BMI has had it done or is going to have it done?

well im not sure the kind of responses you will get. on the other forums I saw people get nasty towards posts like these. Some people would kill to be your starting weight and not to mention you only have like 40 pounds to lose. I totally understand how you feel because I was around 160 my entire high school life and at the age of 19 hit 200 and steadily made it to 215 and now im 39 years old. I struggled to lose the weight for years and years. I wish I would have had this option then.. I did manage to lose 60 pounds on my own twice and another time I lost 40. But it never stayed off. I would gain so fast like 10 pounds a month once I stopped the low carb dieting. So I understand the need for you to gain control and stop the gain in its tracks. I have also heard stories where most doctors declined to agree to this surgery unless you go to Mexico where they approve everyone. I know because I went there. What I have learned from the lower BMI patients, the doctors went with a larger sized bougie because their weight didnt call for a drastic smaller pouch. This is a decision the surgeon makes once he gets inside you and takes a look at your anatomy. You cannot force them to give you a certain size. I believe this is where my issue is. I had a lower BMI at the time 35. Once my surgery was over I was able to eat way way more than anyone else I have heard. I never felt restriction and I eat too much and I only lost 35 pounds after the Sleeve. I have gained that all back because I have no restriction. Im guessing I got a larger pouch to begin with and communicating to the surgeon in Mexico is next to impossible and all they want is more money. So be brave if you get negative responses and make sure you really need this surgery.

Thank you SoCalGal77. I would really hope that no one would get nasty about his post. I would hope that people choose to have this surgery to better their health and improve the way they feel - which includes their confidence level. I am currently 50-60lbs over weight (I'm only 5'3) - that is considered obese. Does someone that weighs 350lbs look at someone who weighs 250lbs and would kill to be their weight?.... This is also not my heaviest weight as I have struggled for years going up and down, diet to diet with no success - all the while feeling incredibly insecure and unhappy. I want to become healthy again and feel confident and happy with myself. I definitely have many more questions to be answered about the surgery - which will now include the bougie size. Thank you for the information and for sharing your story!

My BMI is 35 and my surgery in happening on 8/23. I had my pre-op today. All my pre op tests are done and I am good to go. I have diabetes, high blood pressure, GERD, and sleep apnea. So, while my BMI isn't that high I have many medical issues that my weight makes worse. I am hoping that this surgery will get rid of most of them.

Hi, I'm very new to this site. My BMI is 30-31 and I'm having the sleeve surgery tomorrow. (Yikes, tomorrow!)

I too hope not to be on the giving or receiving end of nastiness...everyone has his or her own story and history and reasons for making this decision.

The only questions I can answer so far are pre-op, obviously, but just wanted to let you know there are people around where you are who decide this is the path to take.

Good luck to you in the process and your weight loss and management journey! Feel free to message me too.

EDITED: I blame the Clear liquids for my less than clear head. Sorry, SD, I mis-read and saw youve already decided and are scheduling. Good luck to both you and frozengrapes!

BMI 29 pre-op. Currently 26 and dropping :)

Go to gastric sleeve social forums and then go to people who started under 200 lbs. Even if you're over 200lbs, we have a great low BMI thread that will answer a lot of your questions/concerns. :) Welcome! Low BMIers are the future high BMIers, so better to get things under control now. That's just MY opinion, of course!

I went in with a low BMI and even had the intake nurse at the hospital upon checking in for surgery tell me I was making a mistake. It was pretty upsetting as I was nervous enough. Everyone seems to have their opinions and I totally agree that if you don't get your weight under control you end up being a high BMI'er. Good for you that you are doing something to make yourself a healthier happier person.

I'm down twelve pounds and feel great! I had great care and followed my doctors directions, I've had minimal pain and no problems at all. No more yo yo dieting just a happy healthy person. Your going to do great! Good luck

@@SD123

My initial BMI was 32.3 last year. Surgeon was happy to operate on me to prevent future complications.

I had a massive, rapid weight gain between 2014-2016.

So, I would have been operated on last July 2015, but the team's endocrinologist diagnosed me with Thyroid disease.

It took 9 months for my thyroid to stabilise, and in that time i piled on another 29Ibs, making it a total of 90Ibs weight gain, and BMI of 37.1

My pre-op weight was 222Ibs.

I am now 5 months post op and lost close to 60Ibs, and still losing.

My excess weight put me in a pre-diabetic stage, and I had beginnings of non alcoholic fatty liver disease. My blood pressure was high, my cholesterol levels were very high, and emotionally I felt completely beaten down.

If I did not have this surgery, my weight would have doubled, and more.

Even though I was only obese for 2 years, it played havoc with my body and emotions.

Now, I am feeling so much better!

And yes, had a few people tell me that they wished they did WLS surgery when they were at my BMI level, and not waited when their BMI got much higher.

Good luck to you, and no-one has a right to tell you what to do or not to do. Any negativity is only someone else's opinion. It has nothing to do with you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
