I'm not a runner-- yet! After being cleared for exercise I'm alternating swimming and attempting to run. The first day I could jog for one tenth of a mile. Now I can jog a third of a mile. I alternate walking and jogging... I'm stupid slow but I enjoy it and will get better. My issue is that I am not sure how to coordinate my breathing and I think I'm losing oxygen because I am breathing in through my mouth. Do you breathe, hold, exhale?

I'd suggest adding a class of yoga to help with learning to breath and to keep balance. It has helped me tremendously not to mention it's a great workout. When I started running (on a treadmill) I had to old on for fear of not being balanced. After yoga I can run without holding on and rarely get stitches now.

you should try to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. But, if you are like me, running makes your nose runny, so breathing through my nose eventually becomes impossible. I like to do breath in for two steps, out for two steps. That keeps my breathing very regular, as long as my pace remains consistent.

PS: You should really look into the Couch to 5k app.

My surgeon's office provided the c25k app! Yes, it is great for someone like me who has never run before! I have been doing my own thing, so to speak, wrt running, but after previewing the app I'm planning to start that to build to a sustained level of activity. Did you use it? My surgeon's office suggests every other day with the app and doing either flexibility or strength on the days between.

I really struggled with my breathing at first. I tried breathing inhaling through my nose and exhaling from my mouth but that didn't work well for me. I found inhaling then taking 3 or 4 steps then exhaling for a couple of steps then inhaling again works better for me. I am still sort of new at this running thing so I am still figuring things out. Good luck.

Definitely get the couch to 5k app. I loved it, it coaches you from walking to running a 5k. It's how I started and it's snowballed from there.

I did use it when I very first started running. In fact, I had to work my way up to being able to use the app by just running for 60 seconds and walking for 4 minutes for a little bit. That's how terrible my endurance was! Now I'm training for a full Marathon next month!

When I was an avid runner, I used to take 2 short breaths in my nose and a long one out of my mouth when running. My lungs seemed to feel more oxygenated that way. I was running a 7 min mile. If I was over exerting myself, the breathing technique didn't always work, and I would end up throwing up. Putting my hands on my head and standing straight as possible while breathing in the nose and out of the mouth would help with that. Whatever you do, DO NOT BEND OVER AT THE WAIST when you feel you have to throw up because you most definitely will!! Good luck!! Lol.

I went for my first ever run today. I managed 1.5 miles at a 12:30 pace. This was way more distance and a lot longer than I thought I could do.

I was breathing in for two steps and out for one.

To help me breath. I mouth the words to my music when I run. It let's me know if can sustain my pace on long runs. Even on the treadmill. I don't care if anyone is laughing. It keeps me focused and pumps up my adrenaline.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
