My brother in law is coming the day after I get back from surgery. He and I always go fishing while he is here. Salmon will be in the river. Obviously I can't fight and land one could I set the hook and pass the pole? I plan to ask my doc but I wanted opinions. We would stop the boat as often as I need to so I can walk.

Whatcha think, can I go fishin?

I would definitely stick with your plan and speaking to your doc first. I'm not sure how that would work out. Setting the hook is typically a pretty strenuous exercise, especially for the midsection, and especially when hooking into a larger fish like a salmon.

Personally, I didn't feel too much "pain" day 1 post-op, but there was discomfort in small tasks such as sitting down, standing up and walking for short bursts, I don't think I would've enjoyed fishing that day....even if I was just setting the hook.

Obviously, everyone's different. Your doc will shed some more light on it for you....best of luck with everything!

You are a tougher man than me, bro.

Day after surgery all I wanted to do was take naps and walk every couple hours.

Also, I'm one of those "prepare for the worst and hope for the best" dudes. Perfect conditions....ripping a lip or two....fine. But what if you slipped and fell.....went in.....etc.

I'd pass for a couple weeks.....but again.....I'm a wimp.

I have to admit that I'm crazy. I figure that if I can handle the flight back ok then I can handle the boat ride. I know that I can do trout or bass but salmon is salmon!

I'd say no...I hope your healing goes really well! But its no joke...you'll have some discomfort and you'll need plenty of rest.

No need to tell you that this is a major surgery but I think you shouldn't even try to go fishing. Heck the ride home from the hospital was a trip, I can't even imagine the bouncy boat ride, even on a glass river. A flight is no comparison.

So, how many days after surgery are you referring to? Your original post made it sound like day 1. At the least you will be fatigued and need to rest, and you will likely have soreness and or pain when standing up and sitting down. I was off pain meds by day 2 and moving around well by day 4.

You could play it by ear and see how you feel. Many people on here seem to have bounced back very quickly after surgery.

After my surgery if someone had asked me to go fishing I would have put a fish hook in their lip- but I am a major wimp and it took me two weeks to feel human again.

Good luck to you!!

Surgery would be on a Monday and this would be the Saturday or Sunday after. I definitely know that I will have to take it easy. I talked to my surgeon and he said that if I was up to it and didn't try to horse it in that would be good but to not be standing or twisting when passing the rod. Trout fishing would be fine.

Unfortunately I'm the guy who can't do nothing. If I'm sick (once every 10-12 years I take a sick day) I feel better doing anything rather than sitting. That always gets me into trouble in my garage because next thing I know I'm cutting, welding, painting, fabricating... Fishing may be the lesser of the evils.

The day is set. Monday is salmon slaying day! I'm doing great. I confirmed with my surgeon that I can rip the lips off of a salmon and pass the pole to my brother in law. I don't care if I get a bite, I'm going to have a great time. For those who fish, we have beautiful chromer Chinooks averaging 30 pounds in the Rogue right now!!!

I did go salmon fishing 7 days after my surgery. I had a great time. No issues whatsoever. I didn't catch a salmon but I did catch a mess load of squaw fish. My brother-in-law got about a 3 to 4 pound Jack Salmon.

My sweetie went out yesterday the same spot that I was at. She got a 14 pound Chinook! We will be smoking those not this weekend but next.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
