Tips on getting enough water?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Before being banded (July 29), I would drink at least 96 ounces of Water - usually more. Since being banded, I'm having a very difficult time even drinking 32 ounces. I think I'm very dehydrated (dizzy, weak, headache...). Any tips on getting enough water? I'm almost to a point where I might go get an IV because I feel so bad and almost faint. Thanks in advance!

I'll work on the belief that 96 ounces was your own choice, not what was advised by the surgery practice?

Space the Water out and start early. I had trouble drinking the recommended need 64 oz. and found it easier it start with one cup immediately out of bed. Within half an hour I have a second with synthroid (which requires a full cup). If you don't have meds, drink the second cup just because. After that, it gets easier. Have another the half hour after Breakfast and another the half hour before lunch if not earlier. And so on. You'll be at least half way to goal.

Another method for getting enough Water which might work for someone who is nervous about drinking a lot at one sitting is to sip constantly through the day. Use a water bottle with measurement indicators to check your progress throughout the day. Just little sips, but take them often throughout the day.

Once you've had a bit more time with your band and what it can handle, I think you will come to feel okay about drinking a cup at a time. Water should trickle right on through past your band, so it shouldn't be a problem. I can understand, though, being nervous about such things those first few days after being banded.

Are your drinks flavored? Sometimes when I only have plain water available I noticed that I'm not reaching my water goal. But if my drinks are flavored then sometimes I even chug it down (not to the point of vomiting) because it's much more palatable. I like Diet Fuze, Diet Snapple, and Powerade Zero since they are sweet, zero calorie, and not carbonated. bmi.png

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
