Hi! I was wondering what those of you who have UHC went through in preparation to your surgery?

I have one more diet visit, and a class, on October 5th, And then they'll be submitting my paper work!

How long did it take you to her approved?

Has anybody been denied? If so, why?

Congrats on everyone's success!

I have UHC and they said it depends on your employer if they chose this procedure as a covered benefit. Mine happened to cover it so it was very easy for me to get approved, I went to a seminar, saw a bariatric dr, got approval from my primary dr, then saw a nutritionist 3 times and I was all set. The office of my bariatric dr submitted everything, I didn't even have to deal with the insurance company at all. Good luck!!!

Yep, @@MulvaRN is right, every employer chooses different options, and mine lessened the usual UHC requirements. All I needed was psych eval, BMI over 40; no wait period. Now I wound up doing lots and lots of tests (blood tests, barium swallow, endoscopy, EKG, chest X-ray, psych eval) and meetings with NUT, support groups, surgeon, pre-op classes, etc. anyway BC that's what my surgeon requires. And it was all valuable.

UHC required a supervised 6 month diet through my primary. Had lots of pre-op testing including a Pysch Eval. All well worth it. Surgeon's office handled everything. Good luck. Still glad I made choice 17 weeks post-op.

That's what I'm going through! I only have 1 more diet visit and a class left. I was just curious. Did you lose weight during your 6 month? Gain? Maintain? If so how much?

I also have UHC. (BMI over 35, but not 40) Insurance required 6 months of supervised visits, blood work and psych eval. I also did an EKG at some point.

I have my 5th appt tomorrow. I hope to have my 6th appointment on September 2nd.

Mine has been a little tricky to navigate because the place I was going to permanently closed right before my 5th appt. So I had to find a new surgeon and do a consult, but so far it seems they will honor the process I've started. I just hope when I get my hands on my medical records from the previous place it contains everything I've done (still waiting on that certified mail to be delivered). *roll eyes

After my next two appointments everything is submitted and if insurance approves, I have to do a pre-op appointment with the surgeon. This is to go over the pre and post -op diet requirements. (The new surgeon requires a two week pre-op diet, even though my insurance doesn't.) Then I'll have a pre-op appointment at the 'Surgery Center' a week before surgery.

According to my new surgeon once they submit everything to the insurance they said it would take 2-4 weeks, but normally they hear back within a week.

It seems a lot easier to get accepted then in Canada - at least in the part of Canada I live in your weight first of all must be within a certain range - if you are over they will work with you to bring your weight down but you will not be accepted for surgery until you are within the range. Then you must meet with a psychologist, kinesiologist, dietician, and a surgical nurse. You must meet a certain criteria and be willing to adjust your exercise levels, eating habits, and have your lab work within a healthy range before you can move on. Any one of them can say you are not a fit candidate. I have my second meeting with the dietician, kinesiologist, and dietician on the 18th hopefully I have meet all my expectations. The next step will be with the anesthesiologist and after that the surgeon before I am given a surgical date. It is a very involved process and they make sure that you have the absolute best chances of success

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
