Protein shakes from POwder- why must be consumed within 10 minutes?

Recommended Posts

Got into a discussion today with a co-worker who always mixes his shakes from powder in the office (I always have premixed at home and brought in). He said his wife told him they should be consumed within 10 minutes of mixing. I called BS on him...only to find out that the label does indeed say that. Imagine that- a man who never read the instructions ;)

For adults, add one (1) scoop to 6-8 ounces or two (2) scoops to 14-16 ounces of your favorite beverage. Consume within 10 minutes after mixing.

Why???

Hell, I have lost 115 lbs in 7 months, if I mixed and consumed immediately maybe I would have lost 150? :P

Following. I haven't noticed that instruction (haven't looked, honestly), and haven't seen this question before, so I'm also curious as to what's up. From what I've heard it could take an hour or more to get a shake down. If I need to figure out the proportions to mix up just a little at a time, that's good to know. :D

I never noticed that either. I'll make a guess that it has to do with the product thickening.

I did some internet sleuthing, and according to some muscle building forums, it appears that the stuff separates and/or gets pretty sludge-y if it's left to sit too long. And if you're mixing with milk, it can go bad if it sits too long. I personally have found that I can't drink the stuff if it's not ice cold. There were some theories about the Proteins and amino acids starting to break down, but most people thought that if there was any effect like that, it would be minimal.

I hope someone else finds something a bit more definitive.

@@ironpoorer - what brand is that? Some use some thickening agents. Or it could be from the marketing people who got tired of complaints from people who would mix it, but forget to shake it up again before drinking again.

Ive heard of drinking Protein within 30 minutes after working out but never within 10 minutes of mixing. Perhaps its the brand hes using. I say keep doing what works for you.

It takes me 45 minutes to drink a Protein drink...no issues yet and my nutritionist hasn't said anything about drinking it all in ten minutes...she's always reminding me to sip!

Neither does the Body Fortress that I notice; I even used to mix up a gallon of it in the blender; adding some Greek yogurt etc and keep it in the fridge for a couple days; never noticed any adverse side effects. Plus leaving it sit allowed it to 'de-air'...I always hated the frothy blender shakes causing stomach gas when drinking fresh. Naturally before pouring one, I would shake it up to get the Protein back into suspension.

Isopure whey powder doesn't say wait
And it doesn't thicken or seperate

From their website and on the Jug also I believe:

Directions:

For adults, add one (1) scoop to 6-8 ounces or two (2) scoops to 14-16 ounces of your favorite beverage. Consume within 10 minutes after mixing. Take this product with an adequate daily Fluid intake. Super Advanced Whey Protein can be taken immediately following exercise or as needed throughout the day in order to meet your daily Protein requirements.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
