Hungry - 11 days Post Op RNY

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I had my gastric bypass surgery on July 28th, and I am on full liquids, yogurt, cottage cheese, consuming 3 oz. per hour. But I find myself hungry as the hour gets closer. Is this normal? Worried I will be hungry all the time.

is it a desire/craving to eat or are you having actual physical symptoms, like gurgling or cramping in your stomach?

You really should not be feeling actual hunger for quite some time. Dehydration can give you symptoms that feel like hunger. Where are you at with fluids?

Or, you are battling head hunger which feels a lot like real hunger. It can be difficult to deal with head hunger but a necessary part of life after WLS. Learning tricks like distracting yourself and drinking lots of Water in between meals. One way to know if it is real hunger is if you are actually craving something specific, in other words if you go and eat something other than what you are craving would it take care of the problem?

For example, I was craving chocolate. I knew it was my head and not my stomach. I tried drinking Water, reading a book, taking a shower and yet still I wanted something chocolate. So, I finally decided to give in but instead of eating chocolate I grabbed a piece of string cheese.

Now, I was full and still craving chocolate. That is definately head hunger and you have to learn ways to deal with it.

I tend to drink a little fat free milk when that happens. It usually does the trick and gives you good Protein. Also milk turns to a solid when it hits your stomach and provides much needed Calcium.

My nut had me drinking milk in between meals in the beginning, now I hardly ever drink it.

Thanks ladies for responding! I think your both right. I wasn't listening to my needs vs. wants. I also was not getting enough Water in, which is a major reason I felt the way I did. I could tell the difference when I got my 64 oz. of Water in how satisfied I was. Understanding and balancing everything is a challenge. Today I started puree stage. Really working on timing, chewing, and meeting my Protein and Fluid requirements. Thank goodness I have a phone app to help me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
