Newbie here with a question on timing

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I have a question about timing. How did you choose when to have your surgery?

I have 2 big events coming up. A 10 day cruise and a 20 year reunion. I can schedule it for 4 months before the cruise. Or after both events.

Which would you do? Or what have you done? How did you feel 4 months post op. Would you go on a cruise?

Thanks!

I think I would have been fine on a cruise. I went on vacation 5 months after. It was actually better because of the weight I had lost.

Barring some sort of horrific complication, you'll be absolutely fine by the cruise. You'll enjoy both the cruise and the reunion more as a lighter weight person IMO.

Heck yes !!!!!

Five months post-op I took a killer vacation and had much fun (first time flying in years.....plenty of room in the seat)......tremendous amount of walking. Followed it up three weeks later with a 7-day cruise where I hit the ship's gym quite often.

I was more than ready for the challenges posed.

Go for it !!!!!

I went on vacation at 3 months out. I came back lighter than before I left. First time that ever happened. Vacation was great! I would go on your cruise!

Do the surgery before everything. Then take the cruise. You'll be hot, sexy, confident and will have a grand time! Plus you'll do all that without pigging out.

Oh you HAVE to do the surgery before both events and show us the photos!

And.....why put off losing weight and getting healthier?

I'm on vacation right now...3 weeks out and having a blast! Walked all around NY, saw a broadway show, got lost in Times Square (lol), now I'm upstate and walking a couple miles every night next to the St. Lawrence river. I echo everyone else! Do it! :)

It really depends on your insurance and surgical team's requirements. Some insurance carriers require 6 or 12 month monitored weight loss program. My insurance did not require that, but my program requires 3 months of supervised visits. I've lost about 20 pounds, but put 2 on during vacation in Nashville last week (too many biscuits and fried chicken) and I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. My surgery is 8/23. Also, it depends on when your surgeon gets approval from your insurance company. They may put a window on the approval.

I went out of town at 4 weeks post-op with no complications, other than not being able to eat much while out ;)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
