Kidney disease after years of taking acid reflux meds?

Recommended Posts

I just read a blog about Many people getting kidney disease after taking prescribed acid reflux meds. Im in the process of gastric sleev surgery, and have been on these meds for years. I know, reflux is a side effect of the surgey, and patients, are put on these med after surgery. Has anyone had kidney disease or heard of this?? Now Im second guessing surgery.

I wouldn't start out by assuming that you'll have reflux or need PPI's for extended periods of time. Those aren't true for everyone (not for me, for example).

If you are truly terrified of the prospect of kidney disease caused by PPI's, you might want to investigate gastric bypass, which does not result in stomach acid and PPI use the way the sleeve does. In fact, revising to gastric bypass is the standard way of curing excess acid caused by the sleeve and not controlled by meds. So, even if you do end up with the sleeve and acid reflux, there are options beyond just taking PPI's for the rest of your life.

Also, being obese is a very high risk factor for kidney disease. So if you really really want to avoid it, you may want to throw into the mix that obtaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to avoid kidney disease, and weight loss surgery is the most effective way known to get to that healthy weight.

Good luck in your decision.

I've never heard that. Obesity and comorbities can certainly cause kidney disease. Talk to your surgeon but I don't think this is a concern.

I worry about that as well, but dont currently experience reflux and hoping i wont after surgery. Look into a procedure called a nissen which also results in weight loss as a side effect of controlling reflux. It wont be as much weight loss as what a sleeve or rny would provide though.

There are many studies out warning about long term effects of ppis and kidney issues is top concern. I worry about this also, but as many have shared lifetime obesity has its own known and dire consequences.

As @@Bufflehead said it is something you will re-evaluate with your surgeon and could come off. You can look up studies, they are talking about multiple years of continuous ppi use and it is not yet known what will be outcome/advice.

This is a big concern for me - I didn't realize the connection between acid reflux meds and kidney disease. My son was diagnosed with acid reflux disease at age 10 (a 24 hour probe into his stomach resulted in 320 episodes of reflux in 24 hours!) Since it was, for the most part, controlled with meds, surgery was shelved. The surgery lasts about 7 years before it can fail. The specialist at Children's decided this. His pediatrician however was not on board at all and wanted us to see a different surgeon for another opinion. Looking back, we probably should have, but as a mom, meds were gentler than surgery so I declined. I will be looking into this more....

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
