Drinking before eating

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I have a question. I was sleeved on July 18th and everything is going great so far. But I was wondering about drinking before eating. I completely understand why we shouldn't drink while we eat and why we should wait 30 minutes after to drink again. But my doctor also said to wait 30 minutes after drinking to eat. I was wondering if this is a big deal. I get they said it might just be head hunger, but if it really is hunger or time to eat again, can we drink right before eating?

Hi I was told you can drink right up to when we eat. Then stop and do not drink till 30 minutes after you eat. My doc gave us a nice binder full of info from the nut.other helpful info. Hope this helps. I had my sleeve almost 2 weeks ago. Good luck!

I'm in the beginning stages of getting prepared but too have been told no drinking 30 mins before, during or 30 mins after eating. The reason I was given is because your stomach will only hold approx. 3 oz and if you drink anything right before eating you won't have room for your food and get the nutrition your body needs. From what I'm learning different doctors have different view points on a lot of things but everyone seem to be doing really well regardless.

Hello all!! I was told Water empties the pouch pretty quickly so 5 mins before I eat and 30 mins after (which kills me). One thing I have learned is everybody's surgeon is soooo different I find it unbelievable

I usually drink right up until I start eating. Then I wait about an hour after eating to drink again. As long as there is nothing in your stomach, the liquid should go right through...I haven't had any issues doing it that way

Thanks guys. I know what goes through you like a funnel. I even saw it when they did pics for my leak test. That's why I didn't know if it really mattered before we ate. I Definitely know why we shouldn't drink for 30 minutes after. :)

I have heard that this isn't true for sleeve patients. With bypass they don't have a pyloric valve to regulate how quickly the food leaves your stomach. For them, liquids can push food through too quickly. Sleeve patients have their pyloric valve intact, so that should keep fluids from "pushing" food through too fast.

This made sense to me when I read it, but didn't do any further research, so I can't say for sure if it's correct..

I do about the same as you though, I drink up to 5 min before I eat, and the 30 minutes after (and I agree, the after part is brutal!).

If I ever do drink while I'm eating (sometimes by mistake/habit, I grab my glass), I get too full, and am not able to eat enough of my meal to be satisfied for long enough. If I try to drink too soon after eating, it's uncomfortable and upsets my stomach.

Best thing for me is drinking until I eat, not drinking while I eat, and then waiting 30 minutes after I eat before drinking again. Never have any problems with this regiment.

Nutritionists at Emory Hospital in Atlanta tell us that there is no data backing up benefits of not drinking 30 before eating.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
