What Gets You Going for Your Workout?

Recommended Posts

Everyone has trouble getting going at some point. You’re tired. You’re busy. You don’t feel like exercising. The weather’s bad. You can think of a million things you’d rather do.

But you know you have to get moving, so how do you get out the door? Do you remind yourself of your reasons, like health, weight loss, and looking good? Do you schedule workouts with an exercise buddy so you don’t chicken out? Do you try new workouts and group exercise classes so you’re never bored? Do you save up great new songs to listen to, or episodes of your favorite TV shows to watch while you’re on the treadmill or stationary bike? Do you make sure you don’t think about until you’ve started, so you don’t have a chance to talk yourself out of it? Do you tell yourself it’s okay if you only do 5 minutes, so long as you at least get started?

There are so many ways to help get yourself started on your workout. Share your tips for getting your workout in, especially on those days when you don’t really feel like it! Your tricks can really help others get motivated to get out the door on those tough days.

It can be different aspects that help me get fired up about hitting the gym or going for a long walk outside.

Being in the gym near my home means I'm going to be surrounded by motivated folks who are pushing themselves. Great stuff to be in the middle of.

Somedays, I get enthused about going just because it's a place where I can got and crank some tunes on my earbuds and enjoy being lost in a crowd and tuning out of life's demands for an hour or two.

When I'm at work.....I look forward to slipping into our gym there for a quick lunchtime session. It is great for stress relief.

Somedays......I don't know what gets me there.....I just go on in. Sore, knees aching, shoulder sore....I just go. Get on the dreadmill and start an uphill walk....and the tunes......and not really think about a thing at all....just relax and keep bumping up the speed and incline.....time passes....calories are burned.....I feel better for it afterwards.

Somedays, it's just an excuse to mix up a pre-workout energy drink and feel the rush, lol.

Going to gym makes me work harder and longer

What keeps me going there is a good playlist of music!

I eliminated all excuses. *Don't want to go to the gym? Then I use the one I put in my house.

*Stir crazy and need to get out of the house (I work from home part of the week). Then I go to a class at the gym to socialize.

*Lack dedication to use home gym or go to the gym? Then my trainer comes over, I can't ditch out on someone knocking on my door.

Consistently working out has now become self fulfilling. It took my a couple of years and some money but now I hate not working out and it is routine for me.

I'm motivated when my exercise has purpose. I sign up for races, 5K's, half marathons, etc. I have a training plan and if I slack, I'm going to suffer on race day. Now I'm far enough in that working out is almost as automatic as brushing my teeth. On days when I don't feel like working out I remind myself that the only bad workout is no workout.

Knowing I feel better physically and mentally by exercising, I can think whatever away and put good thoughts and prayers in the mind.

I have dogs and no fenced in yard so I have to walk them doesn't matter if I want to or not.

But other than that, I just remind myself that doing weights help me gain muscles, more muscle mass better calorie burn at rest. As for cardio, I agree with others that's it's better to have a purspose, I try to bike to the gym do weights and bike back or do errands with bike instead of car as much as possible, or train for 5K

I go straight to the gym after work. Most days I don't feel like it but I go anyway. Once I'm done I always feel energized and happy that I went.

I go right after work also. If I don't it doesn't happen then I regret it. I also get a rebate from my insurance, so I monetary motivation also haha. Also, my nut said I could eat pb if I burn so many calories, and I love pb

For the first time in about 15 years, I actually feel better during/after exercise. It's a HUGE motivator. And music...I love to strap my phone to my arm, put my earbuds in and walk until my playlist is done. I'm only 6 weeks out and I have a torn rotator cuff, so not a lot of good gym time yet, but walking and running (well, more like dragging myself along at a pitiful, slow jog) is actually enjoyable now.

some exercises I really like - like yoga and Aqua Zumba - so I never mind going and in fact, often look forward to it. Any strength-training thing I hate, though, so I look at it the same way I look at flossing my teeth - something that simply has to be done.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
