I was recently told I needed a PEG Tube placed by my Dr. due to the fact I can not eat without getting extremely nauseous. He went in as usual, but wouldn't you know it, the ulcer I have was perforated already before he went in, plus the peritonitis causing further distress. I was then brought to radiology and had a P.I.C.C. line placed. That process was simple, and the initial poke hurt for a few seconds, much less that a traditional I.V. especially if you are like me with veins that are obvious to sight, but love to roll around when trying to get it.

I wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience or is going through something similar. I have not had much luck finding support groups for bariatric procedures that resulted in ulcers, or even the opening from the stomach to the intestines swelling so they needed a dilation via endoscopy. It can be difficult to find support groups in person, especially being stuck on narcotics until the doctor is ready to try the next option. Because I am on pain management the last 4 months, I don't get behind the wheel of the car unless I can avoid the pain meds initially, then I can run any errands instead of waiting for family/friends to drive me when I am on the meds.

I find I still get extremely nauseous even though its not related to the TPN, but the ulcer in my stomach that refuses to heal. If anyone has been in or still in the situation where TPN or a PEG was needed because you could not tolerate food and the nausea was so bad, I would love to hear from you or those you know who underwent this. I am currently down to 127 pounds, and am 6 feet tall.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who is going through or went through any of this in the past.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
