So, my surgery is tomorrow. I take about 8 different pills for stuff like thyroid, cholesterol, and acid reflux. Does anyone who has had the surgery, that also had severe acid reflux that was taking prilosec prescription strength, know at this point is acid reflux still an issue? I know the other meds I may BA able to stop later on, but im due to re up my prilosec and wondered if I should hold off. Thanks for your insight.

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery. But this condition went into remission shortly after surgery and stayed there. My surgeon prescribed that I take prilosec (omeprazole) for the first year after surgery - not for acid reflux but to help my stomach heal.

I had mild GERD prior to gastric bypass, was never taking a prescription for it. My surgeon did put me on Pepcid after surgery to help reduce the chances of gastric ulcers.

I think it's pretty standard to receive prilosec (or similar antacid) after WLS. I never took an antacid before WLS but they gave it to me while I was at the hospital. Definately check with your surgeon. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
