Type one diabetes!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!!! So I'm planning to have the RNY...hopefully sooner than later! Just started the process though in July and see the surgeon next week. (I've already seen the np) Ive also done blood work and NUT visit....I've gotten all my specialties doctors to write letters of support and I'm psyched!!! What an amazing app with stories of good, bad and everything in between!! Love it!

Do we have any type 1 diabetic success stories? I've had diabetes for 21 years now (was dx at age 11) my bmi is 36 and I have a ton of other issues however, what was your diabetes like post RNY? I know I'll never go into remission but just curious the effect on type ones? My doctors seem to think I'll gain better control....however, on the insulin pump I've had for 4 months has dropped my a1c from 9.3- 6.7!! It has made me gain 25 lbs though! Yikes!

Hello, I'm a type one and planning on doing the RNY in November. Just met with the surgeon for the 2nd time and said most of my life things will go down or be gone, except for the diabetes which he said should be under better control. My A1c are always 9.0 to 11. And I now suffer from burning feet with neropathy, (msp). I've done all my appointments and did all the phone coaches from the insurance. I've been on the pump for 5 years and the nurse told me today after the the surgery I will bottom out with lows so I will need to have my endo adjust the pump to work with the new diet. Good luck with your surgery and would love to hear how it works out for you.

Kevin

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
