Hi all,

I am awaiting insurance approval for my surgery. I started my journey back in March. Because of additional testing, to be cleared for surgery it has caused a delay in what I thought would have happened by now. I was hoping to have my surgery before going back to school for the fall semester starting in September. It looks highly unlikely now☹️. I was wondering if anyone had surgery while in school? I would not be able to take weeks off from classes. The program I am in is highly competitive and it would push my graduation date back a year if I take time off (graduating May 2017). What was your length of time out from work or school after having surgery? I do not want to feel like I have come so far and do all that pre-op testing for nothing.

Many people go back to work in a week. From a pain perspective it should be no problem. The toughest part of having WLS is getting used to having to sip liquids like crazy. Every few minutes you are sipping on something.

Me personally, I would not put off surgery. I would try to do both. You will just need to make sure that you always have liquids on you such as Water.

Even now 22 months post op I carry my water bottle every where I go.

This is just my opinion, you might want to ask your surgical team what they think.

If you are feeling ready for the surgery, I would go forward with it. School is tough but I feel like it would be doable with surgery. Do you have a good support system?

If you need it, get accommodations for tests. For example if you normally can't eat or drink during tests, you can get a medical accommodation to be able to do that.

On a cynical note, the weight loss may help you in the job search after you graduate. I know it is a bad thing to say but in my experience it has been true.

I'm in school, and will be having my surgery in November. I just made sure that I have already emailed my professors. I've also made sure I took classes that are/will be slightly flexible for that reason.

You may get lucky and have surgery during a break.

I am scheduled in October and I've been worried about missing school. I have a week off in September I was really hoping I could get it done but no such luck. I have surgery on a Wednesday and I am hoping I can go back to class on Monday. I know it will be rough but I'm hoping I'll at least be able to sit through class and take it easy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
