jaysmm 4 Posted August 5, 2016 Hello guys, I'm 22 years old my weight was 185 and my height is 5'5. Im 5 days post-op and have only lost 5.5lb and i feel hungry all the time. The doctor has only removed 65% of my stomach. So what do you guys think? Is it normal that i'm not losing as i was expecting. Plus has anyone done the surgery with the same weight and height as i am. I have 52lb to lose to reach my goal. Bufflehead 6,358 Posted August 5, 2016 You've "only" lost over a pound a day, 5 days post-op when most people have actually GAINED weight due to all the IV fluids and trauma from surgery? Who led you to think you would be losing more than a pound a day? Whether you needed surgery or not is up to you. It's done now so why worry about it? My advice is to ratchet down your expectations -- significantly -- on the speed of your weight loss. You are starting out as a very lightweight (for surgery) patient and 5 - 8 lbs per month might be more realistic to think about than over 30 pounds per month. Good luck. Sophie74656 1,572 Posted August 5, 2016 well....I would say if you were under 200 lbs and 5'5" I personally think you did NOT need surgery at all. Your starting weight is my GOAL weight. The lower your starting weight is obviously the slower your loss will be.
higher 966 Posted August 5, 2016 5.5 lbs in 5 days is actually pretty rapid weight loss. Not to mention most people have a temporary gain from the IV fluids. Not sure what to tell you on whether or not you needed surgery, that depends on so many personal things I have no idea about. But you're losing weight about as fast as you possible can so stop trippin' on that.

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Frankly, I can't believe you found a doctor who would actually do the surgery. That is a low BMI. Yes, at 22 you could have done it yourself and kept it off. Maybe not 52 pounds, but 35? You'd be 155. That's a great weight.
MayMarie 349 Posted August 5, 2016 I feel like people are being a little critical on here but they did ask if they needed the surgery. The only thing you need to qualify is a bmi over 40 or a bmi over 30 with serious comorbidities
JamieLogical 8,713 Posted August 5, 2016 You are "devastated" to have "only" lost over a pound a day post-op? What on earth were you expecting. Especially with a lower starting weight/BMI, you can't expect to be losing double digits every week! Hell, I had a MUCH higher starting weight than you and I only managed to lose double digits one MONTH of my entire weight loss journey. I still got to my goal by the one year mark and have been maintaining for almost a year now. This isn't a race.

If you ask "did I make a mistake" then you have to be prepared to hear "yes I think you did" Yes which is why I said they did ask the question. But your goal weight has nothing to do with whether or not another person needs surgery. This particular individuals BMI was considered obese and they obviously had a surgeon approve their case. A good majority of us could probably have lost weight with diet and exercise
higher 966 Posted August 5, 2016 No, I agree we all have the right to post our opinions. No problem there. We are just missing a LOT of info from this person in my opinion.

And if we could we would.

I honestly hope that they did otherwise I would personally be shocked that a doctor would do it otherwise

Also you made the decision to have the surgery for you, no one else's opinion matters but yours. And so what if you think you made a mistake? You can't undo it so just set it aside and move on. Plus I've heard regret is normal at this stage. Good for you on your weight loss! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
