Holy Mackerel....first really bad stuck episode in 3 1/2 years

Recommended Posts

Well...it finally happened. I had to leave the table and go to the ladies room to bring up food. I've been a little stuck on several occasions recently, but have always been able to wait it out and let the food go down on it's own. Tonight...no such luck. I was actually at Yankee Stadium in the Jim Beam Lounge with my boyfriend..and totally off topic, loved watching the Mets beat the Yankees tonight. :D

He said the best thing to eat at the stadium was the steak sandwich. He knows I'm banded and suggested we share a sandwich and some ribs. So we sit down and he tells me to try the sandwich first. It was delicious. I was talking and not paying attention as I should...took a second bite...and knew I was in trouble. I started to hiccup and then had trouble breathing. I took a sip of Water and rather than it helping the food get through, I knew I was stuck. He could see I was having trouble so he quieted down to let me focus. I excused myself to go to the ladies room and not a moment too soon. I got into the bathroom stall, bent over the toilet, and up came the steak. I felt better right away and even nibbled on the ribs once I got back to the table. I didn't want him to worry about whether or not I could eat 'normally' so I was glad that I could continue having dinner even though I stayed away from the sandwich just to play it safe.

I don't think he even thought twice about it once he saw I was OK. I even had a little ice cream later on. So now I feel like I've experienced all aspects of being banded....and the thing I feared the most has come to pass, and I got through it.

Drinking Water isn't something I'd do when stuck. It won't wash the food down and is just something else that may have to come back up.

Lately when I've been stuck, it's passed on its own. In the past, when I had to assist stuck food in coming up, I'd eat again right away. I recall, however, being told way back at my practice to do either soft food or liquids (can't recall the recommendation) for the rest of the day.

I've had to get to the bathroom at work really quickly recently. For me it's always eating too fast and not chewing to mush that gets me there. That time it was raw carrot. Just can't seem to eat carrot sticks. Glad you're okay!

I haven't had a true stuck moment in a while but I have had to get up during business lunches and bend over in the bathroom to get the food down. I notice of I'm sitting in a soft chair or a low chair I get stuck more often. Weird.

Glad you got through it!

4 years out and I occasionally have to make that bathroom run. Sometimes, if it's available right away, hot coffee will help to get things unstuck. Sometimes it is sitting up ramrod straight and putting my arms over my head. I have also noticed that if I am at all constipated, I have more difficulty getting the food to go down. You'd think after 4 years I'd be past this, but every once in a while......

Me, too. Sigh. Old habits like eating too fast can reappear, especially when I'm distracted. Glad you're okay and that you know getting stuck is not the end of the world. (Also, I have sometimes used Water to help bring the inevitable to pass).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
