What should I expect in my first visit?

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies! Just curious!

What should I expect on my first visit?

And if I don't have to do any supervised weight loss (which I don't) how soon will I have my surgery date?

What was your experience like?

Give me some insight!

Thank you in advanced!

Jessica:)

My first visit was March 15th. During the visit I was weighed and the surgeon asked about my eating habits, and past weight loss attempts. He also asked which surgery I thought I wanted. I told him the sleeve because I felt like Portion Control was my biggest issue. He agreed that it was the best option for me. After that visit I was scheduled for all the other required stuff....psych visit, NUT visit, pre-op testing....once all of that was done I had one more follow-up visit with the surgeon and my surgery was scheduled for May 16th....so it took a total of about 2 months. I felt like it all went well and pretty quick compared to others who have the required supervised weight loss visits they have to do.

I wish you luck!!!

Kathy

Are you self pay or insurance?

I am self pay.

I had emailed and spoke to the dr office before going in to see him.

I had my consult on july 29th. My surgery is scheduled for august 15th.

I did my prep tests that same day at the hospital.

@jenjenp No mine was through my insurance. Just be careful rushing it too much, make sure you take enough time to educate yourself on all the post-op requirements. You don't want to be early post-op and be wondering what you're suppose to eat. Make sure you have a plan and understand it.

Good luck to you!!!

@jenjenp I think a lot of it depends on whether your self pay or using insurance and what their requirements are. I had my first visit on 05/27/16. During my first visit I weighed in, did bloodwork, met with a nutritionist and then met with psych. Then I met with a "medical" doctor, and we went over everything and decided my best bet was to meet with the surgeon.

I met with the surgeon on 06/13 and we scheduled my surgery that day for 09/14. They submitted to my insurance and I had an approval within a week or so. I have a few appointments in between for an upper GI, more bloodwork, and a clearance from pulmonary and cardiology. I have one last appointment with the surgeon on 9/6 and then I jump on the loser's bench.

From what I have learned and seen, every doctor and every person seems to have a journey that is a little bit different! Best of luck ! :D

I had my first contact with the doctor in December. He holds seminars for free to explain tons of information. I set my first appt with him in January and went threw the heart test, nut classes once a month for 6 months, the pych evaluation and all the weigh ins. On July 14th I had my surgery.

Im glad it took as long as it did because it gave time to wrap my head around the cjanges I was making in my life.

Good luck

Hi I started this at the first of the year. My insurance required 6 months of doctor supervised weight loss efforts. I was just sleeved 9 days ago. I was very bummed to have to wait that long and almost chose to not have it. Guess what? There were so many things including classes, etc that the time flew by. I am so grateful that I had the six months and classes my hospital had to get my head wrapped around this life changing journey. Mostly it just depends on your particular insurance requirements. From what I have seen on here it varies greatly. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck and congrats!!!

Hi ladies! I do have insurance, but I'm a nurse and I have the hospital insurance! My surgery is covered 100% and I don't have to do any supervised weightloss! I just wanted to know what the average wait time was for people who have the same "insurance requirements" as me?! Good luck to all of you!

Within a month depending upon your clinic. Depending on your size sometimes people have to go on a two-week Protein diet others just had a week like myself. That is to shrink your liver so they can do the surgery easier and it's less traumatic for you

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
