So I had my one year post op appointment. They did full labs and my cholesterol was normal in the beginning and now it's high. How can it be and I've lost 156 pounds? I am truly baffled!

That's pretty wild.

I'm intrigued by what my labs will show in October at the one year point.

I'd assumed cholesterol and other stuff would be in good ranges......but don't really have anything to base that on other than the weight loss.

I wonder if it's due to a higher percentage of our food intake is meat and there isn't much in the way of vegetables to buffer this ????

It'll be interesting to see.

Do you have a lot of red meat in your diet or a family history of high cholesterol?

@@LowBMISleever That's what they asked me. No family history and I don't eat a lot of red meat. I suspect it's the dairy, so I'm gonna try to cut back and see if that's it. My good AND bad cholesterol went up, but my triglycerides went down.

Very interesting. This diet is very heavily dairy influenced (if you want anything tasty), which is NOT healthy - fat free or not. I'm struggling with figuring out how I'm going to structure my meals without a heavy dairy influence. Let us know if cutting down dairy improves your next bloodwork.

Which diet? Everyone's plan is completely different. Is your diet from your NUT/Surgeon heavy on dairy? I'm actually surprised to hear that. Aside from occasional greek yogurt, my plan is basically dairy-free.

Aside from lean Protein like chicken/fish I try to eat as much "whole-food" based as possible. I try to keep anything processed out of my diet. There are days when I don't eat any meat at all. On those days I may have an extra Protein shake or some tofu in place of the meat.

If you don't agree with the diet your NUT is giving you, then you might consider speaking with them about alternatives. I'm sure they'd help if asked. Best of luck!

My plan is heavy dairy and I do eat red meat about as much as I eat chicken.

So far, and I am 22 months post op my blood levels have been checked 3 times and all 3 times my cholesterol good and bad have been excellent as well as my triglicerides.

I had terrible cholesterol and triglicerides prior to surgery and it runs in my family but so far everything is excellent, better than ever before in my adult life.

This is not the first time that I have heard this but I am not sure we ever got a clear answer as to why.

My skinny sister who exercises regularly has a higher cholesterol than me. She is a vegetarian (so not a red meat issue).

Is all of your cholesterol high? There is good and bad cholesterol. Also, high cholesterol is not always necessarily that way because of diet.

Do you exercise?

@@Inner Surfer Girl My overall cholesterol is 234, but the ratio was still under 5, so no meds are needed.

I walk about 3 miles a day and do some strength training when I feel like it.

I have a sister who is normal weight and doesn't eat red meat very often and eats mostly healthy and has a very high cholesterol. The one thing she eats that is not healthy is a lot of bread.....I have no idea if that has anything to do with it but she has to take two different medications to keep hers under control.....otherwise it is well over 300.

I hope you get yours figured out.

@@kmorri I follow a low carb diet, so I'm not entirely sure what the deal is. And actually, my diet is no different than it was before. My portions are just greatly diminished with fewer cheat days.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
