Not qualified for a surgery. Yet

Recommended Posts

My BMI is around 30 and I am not morbidly obese. Just simply obese. I have been exercising in a gym about 2-3 times a week for the last 3 years. Somehow it has not effected my weight. I am thinking I have about 30 lbs more to gain to qualify for a bariatric surgery. It will take me but a couple of month. Anybody in the same situation? What do you think?

I wouldn't suggest purposely gaining 30 pounds but if further down the line it happens then you will be able to qualify. Have you considered Mexico ?

Most insurances require you to be morbidly obese (BMI 40 >) or BMI 35-40 with comorbities. They also usually look for a history at these BMIs so I recommend not trying to gain weight to meet BMI guidelines.

I was BMI 29. Went to Mexico with Dr. Ortiz. I was sleeved 2 weeks ago with zero complications. I'm down 17lbs since pre-op :) Best decision I ever made & never looking back!

Do NOT gain weight to get surgery. That's counterproductive to to your health.

You asked what we thought.....here it is:

Don't do it.

Don't gain.

It's very doubtful that such a plan would even work out like you'd want it to. You'd be making yourself miserable in the process.

I read testimonies like the one recently posted by @@LowBMISleever explaining her experience with Dr Ortiz and I bang my head in the wall. I kick myself, too. The reason is that I wish I'd taken those steps so long ago. Well done.

That would be my recommendation. Keep losing....save up some money and schedule when you are ready.

Please please please don't gain to have the surgery. Exercise alone will not get you there. With a 30 BMI, you can do this! But 90% of weight loss comes from diet with exercise being a much smaller portion though still really important.

If you have that good habit built you can begin to change your diet to get rid of this extra weight.

Go speak with a nutritionist, they really really can help you. Moving toward a high Protein, good carb diet is the way to go. Learning about portion management is critical and lastly staying away from sugar, rice, potatoes, Pasta and bread also critical during weight loss.

Here is the thing, if you had this surgery, you would have to change your lifestyle to the above in order for it to be successful long term. So, although I am very thankful for having bypass, if I could have done it withou surgery I would have. My BMI was well over 40 and I had almost every comorbitity.

Gaining weight to get there will only do more damage to your body.

I hope that you find the best solution for you, I am just saying having your insides cut out or rearranged when you are not morbidly obese seems like a risk you don't need to take.

This is just my opinion. I wish you all the best!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
