1maryreigel 31 Posted August 3, 2016 Hello my name is Mary. In 2008 I had lap-band surgery. I lost about 40 pounds and that was it. I had a lapband to sleeve revision in 2012. What a nightmare it has been. I have gone from 235 pounds to 140. I was down to 120 and still losing. I was so sickly looking. I made my own Protein Shakes that were about 1200-1500 calories a piece to be able to gain the weight. My problem is from the moment i had this surgery I have always thrown up. I was not even able to swallow my own spit for a while. I was so dehydrated the first week I had to have IV fluids. The second week I ended up in the hospital for 8 days. Another exploratory surgery where they found a piece of scar tissue and removed it. This did not help the problem. They even tried putting me on nausea meds that they use for cancer patients with no help. I had to have a pic line in my arm for a week. I finally was able to come home. I was so weak and sick I seriously thought I was going to die. I have threw up everyday for the last 4 years. I have had barium swallows, endoscopy and my bariatric surgeon wants to convert it to a bypass. For almost 2 1/2 years I have just refused. I once again had another endoscopy this morning and the gastroenterologist and my bariatric surgeon both said that I have a curve in my sleeve and only a small amount of food is able to pass through and the rest is coming up. I am 54 years old I can not even go out to dinner with my husband to eat dinner due to the throwing up. I am looking for someone who has had the sleeve converted to the bypass. How bad was it? Happydales 12 Posted August 6, 2016 My first after my sleeve surgery was identical to your. I threw up everyday, nausea 24/7, in and out of the ER and hosp, i had to finally ask for a second opinion because my surgeon told me i was just fine. In the beginning i didnt eat anything for 5 weeks. I had been on the strongest antinausea meds and they didnt do anything.. My new dr did an endoscopy and diagnosed me with bile reflux. After starting the medicine it took about 3-4 months before i was feeling normal. My bariatric surg moved away so im now followed by a GI surgeon. I have been doing pretty good. Please let us know how you are doing. I would get a 2nd opinion asap. For myself having the other surg was not guarantee it would fix the bile reflux. In reality it would open me up to a host of other issues. We are about a year apart in age. Prior to surg I was 330 lbs now I weigh 165-170. I feel pretty good after losing 160 pounds. Many of the medical issues I had prior to surg are gone. So there have been positive changes. But I literally thought I was dying too. I had to go to physical therapy to get strength back to start walking again. I hope you get better soon. Laurie
Happydales 12 Posted August 6, 2016 PS... Had to beg my primary care physician to order home IV therapy for anti nausea meds. The oral and sopposatory meds didnt touch the nausea. The doctors thought I was lying to them. It just floored me that people thought I wasn't as sick as I was. Message me anytime if you want to talk. Take care. chai20 14 Posted August 7, 2016 Hello all, I hope you're feeling a bit better. Is your situation unique? I hope so since I'm scheduled for the sleeve in a couple of weeks. Had the lapband removed in June. Starting to freak out myself now. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Pea523 28 Posted August 20, 2016 (edited) @@Happydales may I ask the name and dosage of the medication you are taking for bile reflux? Also, what made the drs come up with that diagnosis? What specific test did they give you and what did they see? Oops, I saw another thread where you wrote your medication and dosage. How does the medication stop the bile reflux?
