One week post-op. Why do I feel so BITCHY?!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone. Today marks one week from my surgery. That's hard to believe. It seems like yesterday. I've lost 20 pounds since I started my pre-op diet 3 weeks ago. I started taking measurements then and did those this morning too. I've lost 3 inches off my waist and 3 more off my hips! I should not be complaining, right? But why am I feeling SO BITCHY?! Seriously! I feel like I have my worst PMS x 10,000. I feel so agitated and annoyed at everything right now.

I do have to wonder if the pain pills had something to do with it. I was given Hydrocodone and was taking them regularly at first, then I went down to like 2x a day, when I got up and when I went to bed. I don't think they helped my pain a ton. They made me very sleepy and like I was really drugged. Everything was blurry and weird. I needed to be able to drive again, so I stopped them completely and didn't take any yesterday. Coincidentally, the major bitchiness started yesterday.

I also have not been meeting my Protein or fluid goals though. I've found it impossible. I think the Hydrocodone was working against me with that too because it made me sleep a lot and you can't drink when you're asleep. Yesterday I got to 57gr of protein (my best yet post-op) but still only 36oz of Fluid because I went to bed early. That was only 434 calories, probably my highest post op number too. So I think the low calories could add to the bitchiness too.

I'm losing weight. This is working. I'm going to be the person who has been trapped inside this body forever. I should be skipping around, so happy. I don't want the new me to be bitchy and miserable, annoyed at the world.

HELP!!! Any ideas why I feel this way or how to help change the mood??

Fat stores estrogen. You are most likely being flooded with hormones. Most of us have been through it and still are. It can be rough, but it helped me to know what was going on. Some days are worse than others, but you just have to ride it out. Hope you feel better soon.

@ - I never thought about this. Thanks for sharing. It's probably all of these combined making it feel like such a whammy right now.

Very very common to be angry, bitchy, and have mood swings in the weeks post-op. First of all, you are probably a little hangry. Second of all, you are healing up, pretty miserable, frustrated, and just having kind of a crappy life right now. And then, finally, like @ said, you have all sorts of hormones stored in your fat that are being released back into your blood stream as you lose weight.

The reasons I was in a bad mood were pain, no longer having the pleasure of food, limited activities and social interactions.

This didn't improve for me until weeks 3-4.

Be kind to yourself, it's too soon to expect feeling like doing cartwheels down the street.

I had a full hysterectomy at age 35, (I'm 45 now) so I still have to take HRT meds (estrogen).

After the hysterectomy procedure, I noticed I'm calm, more patient and have no food cravings. Doesn't matter if I eat a can of green Beans for dinner - whatever. I'm purposely nice. I hope I stay that way. And yes, sometimes I'm cussing in my thoughts lol!

However,

I have noticed a change in a coworker who had a gastric bypass. Talk about bitchy! She was never like that prior. It's been 3 years for her, and she's still bitchy.

I think we all should pay special attention to our behaviors after surgery, much like we do with food. Ain't no reason to be a bitch lol! I got work right next to her every day

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
