So...I have a question...I have not had to use birth control for 6+ years.. I am almost 5 weeks out from LRNY. I was encouraged by my doctor to do the depo shot due to the risks and effects of the others. So my question is...did any of you have the depo shot and did it mess with you loosing weight? I still need to lose 50 more pounds...please give me some insight. Thank you!

My doctor recommended the Depo Shot and I got it the week before surgery. It hasn't effected my weight loss. I'm down almost 30 lbs. My only issue is with losing weight I wonder if it effects the strength? I'm five weeks out since surgery and I've had a heavy period for two weeks. This is something I've never had with the Depo Shot before.

It is very rare to get pregnant on Depo unless they did not get it at the right intervals (or got pregnant before it would be effective). I don't know about impacting weight loss (I don't think it will have a big impact) but have you considered an IUD instead? The thing about Depo is - it's in your system for 90 days whether you have issues or not (you can't stop it or remove it like other forms of bc).

That may be more the hormones from weight loss than the Depo. Your hormones are all wacky after surgery. That is what would concern me though - some on Depo bleed alot and combined with the hormones after WLS - it could be worse.

I figured I would give it to the end of the week and if it doesn't lighten I may call the doctor and see what they suggest. I've never bled like this on the shot.

I gained weight like crazy on it - but that was several

years *before* I had WLS...

and yes - heavy periods may be due more to the fat cells

releasing their estrogen (which happens with weight loss)

My obgyn didn't recommend the IUD because so many women that come see her have had issues...constant spotting, cramping...just something I wouldn't wanna deal with.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
