Any nurses on here?

I'm an OB/NICU nurse and was wondering how you have done with staying hydrated on very busy days...you know, the ones where you don't have time to even sit down . How long were you out after surgery before you went back? TIA!

Hey there...L&D nurse here! I am finishing up my 6 months of supervised visits and hope to have approval and a date soon. I plan to take 6 weeks off since I have a 25 lb weight lifting restriction. As far as staying hydrated I will just leave my contraband drink at the desk and hope for the best :)

TCU nurse, 7 months post op. I definitely struggled with hydration on work days (and still do) but I've found that taking three 16.9oz Water bottles and three crystal light packs helps me get the Fluid down easier and I know I'm getting at least 1.5L in during my shift. L&D is probably much different but we do one assessment q4 hours (7-11, 11-3, 3-7) so I try to get one bottle down before I go back for another round. Some days are crazier than other but you have to take care of yourself if you want to be your best for your patients!

As time goes by and healing occurs you'll be able to drink more at one time which helps. I was off work for 6 weeks and needed every second of that recovery time. The exhaustion was real when I went back to 12s.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
