Liquid Diet Post-Op length?

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone, so I had my surgery on Mon-July-25th & started a liquid diet on July 24th. I am still on a liquid diet and I am 8 days post op. I was wondering how long you were on a liquid diet after surgery? I am starting to get hungry (even though most of it is my mind playing tricks), but it would be nice to have some pureed food or even yogurt! Yesterday I started getting lightheaded and it's back again today :( I am drinking my liquids, having broth, Jello, & Premier Protein. Did any of you go through this?

@@guy17 Try adding something with electrolytes. On your full liquid diet, are you allowed creamed Soups (strained)? Try drinking more of the Protein shakes too. I am pre-op but I only have 7 days of full liquids and then purees.

One thing to consider too - if you are on blood pressure meds - they may need to be adjusted. If you still get lightheaded - call your surgeon - they may allow you to add yogurt. Good luck!

@@KristenLe : I had creamed Soup and I didn't like it very much. I am not on any meds and in fact I stopped taking my pain medication because I no longer have pain

I'm on full liquids for 2 weeks post op. I drink Premier Protein shakes. Today I mixed some PB powder with a chocolate one in my blender. Amazing. I can have sugar free pudding that's been thinned down. Cream Soups that have been strained. Vitamin Water zero....

I was on liquids for 4 weeks post op and it didn't kill me. Hang in there! Don't give in to temptation to start ignoring your surgeon's plan for you. That is a slippery slope you do not want to head down.

I had 3-4 Premier Protein or Pure Protein shakes a day for the two weeks leading up to surgery.

I had 2-3 Premier Protein shakes a day for the four weeks after surgery.

No regrets and I'll do it again if I need to accelerate weight loss.

There is entirely too much complaining among wls patients in general about the liquid diet. We chose to have surgery to help us address being morbidly obese. It takes effort on our part. If we can't do the liquid part of it.....then I'd submit we aren't ready to commit to the surgery and embrace the changes we'll each need to make.

Have you not received a detailed post-op diet plan?

Mine was 1 week Clear Liquids (with a couple of exceptions, 1 week full liquids, 1 week soft, 1 week soft mechanical, etc.

If in doubt, why not give your NUT and/or your surgeon's office a call?

I was on Clear liquids for six weeks and now a chicken Soup is always my go to because I know my sleeve likes it. I made a beef broth today that was really nice too. Icelollies (popscicles) are such a nice change in the warm weather.

Cream Soups didn't agree with me but as you move to full liquids (soup with stuff in), they are so easy to make and you can put in what you can tolerate.

Carrots in Soup work for me, potatoes do too but I am trying to stay carb low.

You can even blend commercial beef stews etc if you don't like cooking.

Not all liquids are equal!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
