My story is boring compared to most. I talked to the Dr as he passed by me in pre-op. He smiled and said something like "see ya in a few". I waved back and smiled. The nurse walked me into the OR where they had music playing, something like CCR, and the anesthetist was asking me about the drive (we drove 4 hours to get there the day before). I started to talk about the drive, was going to tell him about the pain in my lower back and boom! I woke up talking about the pain in my back. I only had mild discomfort in my tummy. I was afraid they didn't do the surgery. The worst was the back pain and nausea.

My surgeon came into the holding area and took my hand and I blurted out how wonderfully soft his hands were. He said yes his wife complains because she gets stuck with all the yard work and gardening. I felt stupid for saying such a personal remark but then he said he would take really good care of me and I felt better.

All I can remember after that was how kind all the OR nurses were to me because I was so frightened. They held my hand until I fell asleep and had such compassion in their eyes. I saw real kindness in that hospital from all levels. From the housekeeping staff all the way up to the surgeon and the anesiologists, etc. And such cute male nurses too!

My surgeon wasn't there when I was going under, but I was with the anesthesiologist for a while.. and I was soooo scared about the cathedar, that was the only thing I was worrying about. So a couple nurses came up who introduced themselves and I said "So who is putting in the cathedar??".. and they laughed and said "Lap-Band patients don't get the cathedar". HALLELUJAH! I just kept telling them over and over how they just made my entire day because that was the only concern I had with this surgery. And then they knocked me out.. probably tired of hearing me say it over and over

Well, I can reply now since I had surgery 48 hours ago!

Dr. Edwards came by in the holding area and gave me a big hug. I thanked him for going to Medical School. He was in between cases and then hurried off to his next one. The last thing I said to the anesthesia staff was how Jr Mints were very refreshing. The CRNA smiled in acknowledgement and as I was wheeled down the hall to OR, I told them I'd met Jerry Seinfeld once and he had been a jerk. I don't remember this but my husband told me the conversation later.

My friend made me paranoid before the surgery by saying I should take a sharpie and write "lapband" on my belly so as not to get the bypass.

Well, that caused me to ask everyone I came in contact with to tell me what thought I was there for. Pain in the ass that I am....They just laughed at me, read the chart, told me "lapband"...I told them I nearly wrote it on my belly, which caused them to laugh...The very last words out of my mouth was probably "palm trees..." I was asked to describe a tropical vacation....

That's funny Juli, I did have to write lapband on my belly before sugery. I wrote it and the surgical nurse signed it. ~Mandy

My Mexican ansethesiologist was wonderful as well! I told him--in my version of Spanish--that I was getting really nervous and he was very caring and reassuring as he gave me an injection into my IV. That's the last thing I remember until I was back in my room! The surgeon? What surgeon? He spent maybe 2 minutes total with me. But so far the band is working great--he did his job!

Man, I was scared sh-tless walking into my surgery, and so I suppose all I was saying was "ok" and "thank you". I honestly have no recollection of what I said. My surgeon wasn't there, but the anesthesiologist was...and he was very nice. I think I was just nodding and complying with what they said. I just remember being *freaked out* that I was laying there, naked, in a room full of strangers and wondering why in the hell I was going to let them cut into a perfectly healthy, albeit overweight, body.

When I woke up, I patted my stomach, felt the glue there and asked "am I done?" Being under was to me sort of blank. Like I left my body. The closest thing to dying I've ever known.... So I was sort of shocked I came back, to be honest.

I do remember struggling to come out of anesthesia. And so this VERY kind male nurse, in an attempt to get me conscious, asked me my sister's telephone number. I said the area code...passed out ten minutes...woke up...shouted the next three numbers...passed out.....twenty minutes later...woke up and mumbled the final four digits.

He teased me about it later when I finally shrugged off the stuff....I was very embarrassed.
