Hair loss - can anyone suggest supplements?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm 5 months post surgery and my Hair loss started last month.

I've lost 4.5 stone and weight loss steady at couple 2-3 lbs per week.

My bariatric nurse was surprised when I mentioned it, she said it was uncommon with the sleeves... so now I'm worried I might not be getting enough of something from my Vitamins and diet.

Can anyone suggest a supplement that helps?

Thanks :)

I started using Biotin 10,000 units at my 6 month weigh ins before surgery. I am 22 months out and I still take it everyday. My Hair loss is not noticible at all, I do lose some when shampooed but just a little more than before WLS.

My nails grow fast also but still thin so I do the acrylic.

I'm also 59 and my stylist says I still have thick hair and it grows fast!

Wow I started using 10,000 units 2 weeks after surgery they told me that is common between 3-6 months and most people it comes back in rare cases it doesn't. My hair is already thinning from the top so I am being really adamite about taking shakes and Vitamins. Don't fret. You will be fine any time your body goes through ketosis that happens.

Biotin definitely. And it's not unusual. Several docs told me that it happens with sleeve and bypass. It has to do with Vitamin absorbtion and our lack of ability to do so fully after surgery.

What helped my hair the most was powdered marine collagen added to a bottle of Water. This helped cut my Hair loss in about half if not more. I also drink a cup of bamboo tea (high in silica) everyday and that has helped a lot too. It has made my hair softer, shiny and stronger and slowed down the loss also.

I tried Biotin, but for me it didn't work except for areas I really don't want extra hair- LOL.

@ladydarkness I think maybe you should think about reframing the hair loss thing in your mind.

I feel your pain with Hair loss truly I do. As a breast cancer survivor I was bald for 2 years during cancer treatment. It was hell on my ego for a long time till my 8 year old told me i had a "really pretty round head". He made me LOL. That made the treatments worth it even more. So I'm thinking that if hair loss (again) is a price to be paid to be healthier and thinner for myself and my son and the future, damn the price, I'll pay it. love & peace!

I lost hair for about 6 months , I chopped my hair to bob and layered the heck of it , no one really noticed enough to mention it anyhow, and now it's shoulder length and loving the layers

I had the same problem and increase Biotin to 10,000. It's been a month but I see it coming back. I've lost over 1/2 of my hair!!

Has anyone been eating Brazil nuts to prevent hair loss? - they are high in selenium - I am doing that and wondering how well it will work. I also take a skin hair and nails supplement (have done for years)

You should be VERY careful not have too much selenium.... it is very toxic in large doses... 2-3 brazil nuts is plenty, Which is around 150mcg... a daily minimum requirement is around 55mcg so 3 nuts is triple the minimum requirement.

Toxicity symptoms include:

Hair loss

nail loss

diarrhea

skin rashes

fatigue

irritability

nervous system abnormalities

Anyone thinking of mega dosing, DO NOT DO IT.... you could seriously damage your nervous system.

No problem.... i just thought i would point it out... last thing we want is for other issues to happen because of an innocent looking brazil nut lol

Anything in excess has the potential to cause issues.. everything in moderation ????

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
