Hey all just starting my process with Kaiser and I go August 5th for my medical and mental evaluations and was just wanting to hear of any experiences with Kaiser. How long was your journey? Classes? Pre-op diet?

I have Kaiser. It took me about 16 months from the date I asked my doctor for a referral to my surgical date. I had to do two seminars where people asked the same questions over and over and over. I did one small group meeting before starting my work with the nutritionist. My nutritionist told me I would not be approved after 6 months because I was still drinking Diet Pepsi. Eliminated that and got approved the following month. It seemed to take forever to get the surgical consult (a few months). I had to have a sleep study, mental health evaluation, endoscopy and an H. Pylori test. Everything got delayed another several because my A1C was too high. Once I got that reigned in I waited another two months to get scheduled (which was 2 months from that point). I was worried that they would kick me out because I gained some weight back with new birth control and an insulin switch.

All in all, the whole process took from Feb 2015 to June 2016. I could have probably shaved a few months off, but the timing worked out great for me because it was right after the spring semester ended.

For me, it has been a 6 month process at Kaiser Fremont Bariatric. Went to two seminars, got scheduled for an initial consultation with surgeon and nutritionist, then was placed on the reduced calorie diet. I began this process in late February. I received a surgery date in mid July for August 8 (one week from today). Which Kaiser are you going through?

I'm through Kaiser in Colorado. I go August 5th for my mental and medical evaluations. My weight management dr said with the insurance I have as a state employee the process is way simpler so hopefully it's smooth and quick

I'm with Kaiser as well. I saw my PCP on 7/29. She put in my referral for the department of health education. They called me that same day and scheduled me for orientation on 8/11. From what I understand, I fill out paperwork that day and then I can start the options classes. She said the options classes are 12 weeks long (1/week). My doctor did say to make sure I do everything they ask of me to make it easier for the insurance to approve me. I was told from another member her process took about 5 months. I also was told by someone else their process took 9 months and she had to do a medically supervised diet (she chose weight watchers) bc the insurance required her to. I don't know what all will be required of me (Kaiser Orange County, CA) but I will post updates when I know more.

I am actually. I've spent the last several days ruminating over this and that, but today I woke up and felt hopeful and optimistic. It really has been a roller coaster of emotions.

Congrats! I wish all Kaisers had the same process! Haha. My orientation isn't until next week on the 11th. Options classes start in September, but ours in So. Cal. are 12 weeks long. I don't know for sure but I think I might have to do a diet plan thru WW since I don't have any MSWL on record. I emailed the RN and she said they would be happy to answer any questions at the orientation lol, so I got no answers but it's okay cause I can wait a week. I wonder how fast you'll get your surgery date after the classes? Do you have to do a MSWL program? And do you have a required sleep study? JW Lol. I'm rambling, CONGRATS!

The only diet I will have to do is the pre op liver shrinking diet for either 1-2 weeks. And it's usually around 4 months after classes that surgery happens. No orientation, only the 6 classes and no sleep study.

Nice! Do you ever think, by this time next year I can wear shorts from a normal size? LOL that's been my thoughts lately. I have two pairs of shorts and I have underbelly and muffin top in one pair but damn it, I will squeeze my ass into them if that's the last thing I'll do! Haha. I love summer time but I hate having to shop for summer clothes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
