Weight loss Pre Surgery

Recommended Posts

My last appointment for pre surgery is August 15th. So my surgery should be in September sometime assuming all goes well with insurance. I have completed everything on the checklist and gotten all my clearances. My problem is that I have NOT lost any weight during my 6 month waiting period. How important is that too the insurance companies in the approval of surgery?

I'm in the same boat! I yo-yo'd 3 lbs back and forth and am just playing the waiting game. My Dr kept telling me that insurance just does it as a formality to see if you really want surgery or if you will give up. Every insurance policy is different though, so I can't be of much more help, just my 2 cents. Some people have been denied for not losing enough per their policy, but it just really depends. Hopefully all of my stuff will be sent off to insurance this coming week, so I'll be sure to let you know how mine turns out!

Thank you. I have definitely been to yo yoing . I know my doctor wants to see it, but hopefully it doesn't make a huge difference in whether or not he decides to do the surgery or not. And hopefully insurance doesn't debt me either because of it. I have 15 days still to lose some weight, so it can be done I guess. Just not for sure how much they expect to see lost either.

It really depends on your insurance. They all have slightly different requirements. You could call them and ask.

I was told by my surgeon that I needed to lose 10 pounds before surgery. Well I lost 16, he wants to make sure you are serious about this weight loss.

This is just a tool, you will need to work on losing weight. It's been awfully hard with being 1 year and 10 months out staying on track! Yeah I fell off about 3 months ago, a slice of pizza, a white chocolate kit kat! Was so good, I don't like anything in the brown chocolate categories. Just a lost of smell and taste 3 years ago made my taste buds way off.

So yes it is important to lose some weight before surgery so you can show your surgeon and insurance that you are committed to this.

I'm back online now and the weight is very hard for me to lose, have gone down 4 pounds in 2 weeks. I know the last 10 pounds are the hardest, but I'm back and ready to do this!

Good luck on your upcoming surgeries

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
