Length of hospital stay?

Recommended Posts

How long were most of you in the hospital for? I've read some people have just one over night stay, some have had 4 days in.. What can I expect? I'm only taking 2 weeks off work, that better be enough

It was supposed to have been two nights, but I stayed three nights because I could not drink enough to stay hydrated. I went home the morning of day three and I was fine. I took one week off from work and was fine. Good luck.

Surgery was around 9:00am on a Tuesday and I was released Wednesday afternoon around 4:30pm.

Took 3 weeks off to allow the simultaneous umbilical hernia repair to heal.

Thanks guys (and gals). I'm work in Human Resources so I don't want to take much time off. My employees need me :-)

They need you to be healthy, too!

You don't get bonus points for going back too early, especially if you have complications or just need more time to recover.

2 nights. Was released late afternoon on the 3rd day. I had to stay a bit longer due to my blood pressure spiking post op, uncontrollable nausea, and inability to drink enough (they required 40oz a day in the hospital)...

You take care of yourself first and worry about recovery. In my opinion, they'll probably do fine while you are away. You just concentrate on healing.

I had surgery on a Thursday morning and went home around 3 pm Friday. I was in my office on Tuesday and traveled for work at 2 and a half weeks post op.

One night. Surgery at 2 PM, went home at 8 PM the next day. Recovery was really fast and I was back at work after taking off 6 days.

Mine was last week and was outpatient. 9:30 procedure and home by 3:30. Had an awesome team before and after at the clinic and at home. I am taking 7 days from work + the 2 weekends. Best advice is take the time you feel you need to be 100%. Good luck!!

I wasn't going to rush it. Insurance covers up to 5 days, but mostly allowing for complications. I figured maybe two nights. However my colleague was in Cleveland clinic giving her husband a kidney. She came home sick after 2 days post op. Hubby still in 2 weeks later. Both reportedly contracted "hospital infections". She told me to leave as soon as I could. Great surgeons but so many germs. Ugh

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
