I seen allot about giving up diet soda on the boards today and I was just wondering what the reasoning behind giving it up is, diet Pepsi has no calories, no carbs, no sugar. Is it just the carbonation? Just curious I'm new to all this, my initial consult is Aug 10 and I have to do 6 months.

Before WLS it increased my appetite and sugar cravings.

I glad to drop diet soda all together.

The reasons are many: carbonation (which can cause painful gas in a sleeved stomach), and the excessive chemicals and overly sweetened taste can become a trigger for eating/drinking full sugar food and drink. Caffeine is also dehydrating, so you can't should drink more Water or other beverages to compensate if you drink soda.

Soda is a pointless, unhealthy thing all the way round to consume at all - sleeve or not.

Many doctors ban it completely, but some do say it is okay after a certain time out from the sleeve, you can have them again, usually over ice to allow it to be diluted and reduce excessive carbonation.

I still drink it, over ice (never from a can or bottle any more). I was one that was told if I just had to have an occasional soda, to make sure it was diet and let the carbonation dissipate a bit before drinking.

I drink them fully understanding it's nothing but nasty chemicals and not good for me.

"In addition, because of their effervescence, carbonated beverages pull excess air into the newly formed stomach pouch. This can cause stomach upset, nausea, and excess gas. There is a risk of damaging the stomach pouch if extreme nausea occurs immediately after the operation."

Medically, once you are healed from surgery, you can drink diet coke all you want- it isn't going to hurt you anymore than it would have before you had surgery. That being said, it's not good for you, but having a sleeve or not, ultimately you're not hurting yourself more or less with a smaller stomach.

I drink diet soda all the time. It's good.

Diet pop is not pointless. It is 99% Water after all so it has the same benefits as Water. It has no calories or sugars. You won't gain weight by drinking. Someone will inevitably post a flawed study that shows correlation between obesity and drinking diet pop but not causation. I have lost 120 pounds drinking it. Here's to 120 more.

I drank Diet Dew right up until the day prior to my VSG surgery.

I haven't had it since due to the carbonation.

I truly don't miss it.

There are many flavors of Diet Snapple that are excellent.

I just 'quit' Diet Pepsi after years of drinking it ALL day and ALL night. It was tough for a few days but now it tastes terrible to me - very syrupy and overly sweet. I'm drinking mostly Sparkling Water products or using Crystal Light.

When I had a Diet Pepsi the other day, I felt tired and icky the rest of the day. Then, I tried again yesterday to see if it was the Diet Pepsi making me feel tired and icky, and I did feel yucky after drinking it.

I think it was making me more tired and triggering me to eat more sweet things. My taste buds seem to be mellowing out since stopping Diet Pepsi. I feel MUCH better since quitting them - physically better. I'll still drink it here and there - usually as a treat at a restaurant since I think the product from a fountain is more palatable.

I'm not anti-Diet Pepsi but I think it's been making me feel worse.

I drank Diet Pepsi for 34 years. During that time I gained 250 lbs and developed two life-threatening autoimmune illnesses. Went off it 8 years ago and eliminated both illnesses. My opinion of "diet" soda and anything else with artificial sweeteners is it's detrimental to health and well-being.

I agree @tranformation!! I do not drink diet anything. I think its aweful tasting. Thankfully I was and am not now a soda drinker but I do miss carbonation :-(

I was a seltzer drinker and beer occasionally but I've become a crystal light drinker. ;-)

It will be all worth it :o

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
